California - Northern

wow.

Thats a LOT of snow. Did you bring the chickens/quail inside/into the garage?

Yes, the qualies are inside for the winter until their greenhouse is finished in the spring :D Next year they will spend outdoors, but cuddled up near the heated aquaponics setup which should keep the whole greenhouse from freezing solid. Plus, they do much much better in cold than chickens!

I have been snowed in for two days! It is taking the plows 24+ hrs to reach us and even then they can barely make it up our hill! Still waiting on them today, there is almost two feet of snow on the road still. Snow day, woohoo! I never had snow days growing up in the Bay :D

Cool! Our local quail are nesting under our lemon trees, which are covered with blankets, to keep from freezing. Ocasionally the chickens will try to see the quail, but the cat will start stalking the quail. Also, we try to keep the local quail out of out yard, as we don't want the chickens catching diseases.

Hey, Sacramento area people!

Come spring, I would like to order sexed silkie day old pullets from MPC, but the smallest order that can be delivered is 9. I only want 3. I don't suppose anyone would be interested in splitting an order? I'd cover the shipping (the expensive part) so all you'd have to pay for is the chicks. Heck, I'll even deliver them to you or meet you part way.

This is all hypothetical at this point, but if like to see if it's be something people would be open to. Can't have roos, or I'd buy from a local breeder. And I'd like day olds. Most area breeders only sell at 3 weeks.

Or is this something that should go in the Swaps forum? I'm new at this, and I don't want to break the rules.
Aunt Angus, I'm in the Sacramento area too and may be interested in splitting a silkie order. I could only take 2-3 though, so please let me know if you find someone else to also split the minimum with.

Speaking of Silkies... does anyone know of any good breeders in Northern California or Southern Oregon? I am looking for an older (15 weeks+) Silkie rooster or rooster hen pair to buy!
