Congrats on the new birds cooper! Can't wait to see em good.

Off topic question..... Have you seen much hawk activities in your neck off the woods lately? I had a mom and her kids here all summer, moms here kids are gone from what I've noticed.
Yes, I had a hawk fly just over my car on the way to Costco today. It was a big beautiful one too.

My husband doesn't understand my interest in chickens, but I think he's warming up to them. I've been buying peanuts for the layers, since feeding peanuts can increase egg size. Paul has found it relaxing to hand feed them their peanuts in the evenings. Of course, he does feed them "one for you, one for me".

love the peanut story (and photo), Kim!

my two SPPRs & the two cuckoo marans decided to go tree-climbing this morning:

i know they are birds, but they just look so silly up in the oaks!

and a few minutes after i took this, a small hawk flew through the upper branches with a bird in its talons (NOT one of my younger chicks, thankfully!) -- these girls made a hasty exit from the tree at that point.

I'm sure I've mentioned it on here several times, that I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel (like down to the bare walls remodel). So far besides our contractor and his two laborers, we've had a plumber, electrician, drywall & sheetmetal worker here. No one leaves without a dozen eggs. The guys that make repeated trips get a dozen eggs most trips (I get around 3 dozen per day, plus a dozen quail eggs).

On Friday, the drywall guy was here and went home with eggs, tomatoes and HOT peppers from my garden. He was here again yesterday and I gave him some more eggs. He immediately opened the carton and pulled out a BCM egg and wanted to know what kind of chicken laid it. I told him the breed and explained a little about them (we struggle a bit with a slight language barrier between us). He almost had tears in his eyes when he said he hadn't tasted an egg like that since he left Mexico. I tried to explain it was the way the bird is raised and fed, not the breed, but he was excited that I had given him two more of their eggs in the new carton. I have to say, my BCM eggs are pretty nice (7-8 on the Marans chart), but I have a short moratorium on hatching until we get back from our vacation in Mexico, so everything is going into the eating eggs.

He'll be back to make a few more patches tomorrow (remodeling the kitchen, but while I have the guys here I'm making some miscellaneous fixes). I'm going to put together as many BCM eggs as I can gather for him.

Great picture of Paul feeding peanuts to the chickens. Good Job!

Laura, Chickens do like to go high up there don't they?

How is your mystery Marraduna Basque doing? Mine that was supposed to be a girl may wind up being a boy.

I have been very busy today. I cleaned the garage, coops, made Apricot Pineapple Jelly, Boston Cream pie and will soon start working on rolls for dinner. Dinner is chicken Jambalaya.

I should sleep well tonight!
