Jason... Fingers crossed your Short Sale purchase goes through and I'll bring you chicks as a house warming gift.

thank you....

Hey Jason. I've been doing dome comparative reading about penes vs islandics.
I think I'd be more happy breeding the penedesencas.
What would be a good move to starting up a nice flock of the different varieties of them?
I still have to build a few extra pens, but that's already in the works.

I can't believe the pendesenca thread has only generated 70 pages in 3 years. Looks like they are pretty rare!
There are a few dedicated breeders that I have found but there seems to be no direction. Not too many people wanting to work together.
That is the main problem I fell. There are really no breeders west of the Rockies. A few people here and there keep some. To me it is frustrating at times but
looking at the big picture the breed really needs help. I tried to get on the breeder page of the penedesenca website and was told to join the yahoo group and post there.
Most of the breeders on there page do not breed them anymore. That has to be discouraging for people wanting eggs or chicks to get kicked back emails or responses saying we dont do them anymore.
I am getting black from Sandhill in Spring and eggs from Lee Penny back east. Maybe chicks. Sandhill does Partridge as well. Sandhills are not the best but you take what you can get and breed the best birds.
In the spring Jim Poole has wheaten and partridge on ebay.
I will have crele penedesenca and white empordanesa in the early spring ( though I plan on keeping and hatching most of these ) should have Partridge in the early summer depending on how the chicks hatch and if they are good pene form. Besides that I will let you know when I find more. I am constantly looking

That's too bad. I don't really know much about these breeds. I did some quick googling and it looks like they forage well when allowed to do so, are good layers, very dark brown eggs and despite their small frame- good meat? I would love to hear more about them. Why do you like them? What has been your experience with them so far?

Thanks Jason. I'll get up on my reading until I aquire some nice stock to start breeding!

Quote: Ask and ye shall receive! haha Let me know if/when you'll have any you are ready to part with. Hatching eggs will have to wait until one of my BOs go broody though.

I am so excited. After culling my flock I have 7 Buff Orp girls, 1 black orp/marans mix girl (she is FLUFFY and big. bigger and fluffier than her same aged full blood Buff Orp sisters), 2 EEs and 1 bantam BLW. So only 11 ladies now. 2 roosters I am keeping right now. So not very many chickens. :D I'm ready for a teeny bit of chicken math. haha! Oh and 2 Leghorn pullets that Ron is sending my way later this month. So I will have 13. Still doesn't seem like enough. ;)
That amount of hens will provide you with enough eggs for a nice little egg business...and remember how quickly your flock grows when someone starts a broody trend! Pam

The black are more dual purpose. the main issue is they mature so slow. my 7 month old is still fairly thin.
They do lay good amounts of eggs where the winters are not too cold and are alert and good foragers. I just pm'd you back with more info.
Gotta run to work but can go more into it when I get back.
Thanks Jason

X2 :D

My roosters started *singing* at 4 am this morning. Usually, I barely notice them crowing, but all 7 of them were going at it for about an hour. Good thing I'm zoned Ag!

Pam, have fun in Hawaii!

Quote: I had one shipped that was packed in newspaper and egg cartons. Can you say scramble eggs? I tried to salvage them, but not a single one hatched. I will only get live birds from that source.......
Quote: Usually, the better the hatch rate the closer to 50% you will get. You will probably do better with the rooster to hen ratio with hatched chicks over straight run. Auto Sexing breeds would be the way to go. Partridge Penes are 80% auto sexing.
Big Daddy's Mom - have a great time in Hawaii!

Jason - I've heard penedesenca's are pretty flighty. Do you find that to be the case?
I have two and the boy is starting to crow. He lives in the Garage now. He is not mean and does not bite and etc. but he does not like me much and he does not like the kennel. I put him back out with his sister, the TJs chicks and the one Basque hen in the evening. He rushes the door when I open the kennel and tries very hard to get away. The hatch of Marans seemed more flighty but the Penes seem to just not care for people. You would not want them for pets but they would be fantastic range birds.

Ron
