I've been told that upping the protein, using calf manna will darken the marans eggs, does anyone know about that claim?

Over time, soy will mess up the chickens. No Animal should eat soy all the time.

On the Heritage thread someone said to get horse Manure and feed it to the chickens. It is supposed to make the feathers look better for a show.

I can see a lot of problems with that. mixing manure into feed is how we spread Mad Cow Disease.

The color comes from a pigment, which is probably produced by liver enzymes. Increasing the enzymes might make them darker. Probably not protein level.

So, I see you answered my question before I even answered it! That shows how fast this thread can move!

I don't know where you saw that. The only people that I've read that recommend manure for chickens were talking about them eating the leftover grains in the manure.

Mad Cow Disease is not from manure in the feed. It is from animal tissue and bone meal, most likely brain or spinal cord tissue. Mad Cow Disease is a type of prion disease.

Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of rare progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals. They are distinguished by long incubation periods, characteristic spongiform changes associated with neuronal loss, and a failure to induce inflammatory response.
The causative agents of TSEs are believed to be prions. The term "prions" refers to abnormal, pathogenic agents that are transmissible and are able to induce abnormal folding of specific normal cellular proteins called prion proteins that are found most abundantly in the brain. The functions of these normal prion proteins are still not completely understood. The abnormal folding of the prion proteins leads to brain damage and the characteristic signs and symptoms of the disease. Prion diseases are usually rapidly progressive and always fatal.

According to the Manna Pro website, Brentwood Feed is supposed to have it (I think that I knew that), Alamo Feed and also Rhodies! That would be convenient for you, Cheryl!

THANKS

I have 2 bags to start with that hubby got when he went down to santa cruz (to pick up some new golf clubs) this last week. I talked him into stopping into a feed store for me.
