Yep, hard to tell blacks from blues until their wing feathers come in. Splashes are easy..
Over half of these chicks turned out to be blue, but you can't really tell unless you examine their wing tips in good light.

See the hint of blue?

A group of 3 splash chicks and a "regular" colored chick. The splashes should have the same markings as regular barnies but really diluted.

VERY BEAUTIFUL CHICKS!!

Well Trisha... I am blown away with these little cuties... Fifteen.... Fifteen, I can't believe it!
I thought only 12 made it to lock down. I must have miss counted. I had about 50 chicks go in to lock down.
I had such a great hatch. I ended up with another 19 cream Legbars. Lots of girls this time. Thank God.

Well, looks like I got some splash....:) I can also see some definite blue in some of the darker ones.
Thank you for all your hard work.. I am very excited to watch them grow...

Are you legbars still laying?! mine have virtually stopped. I get an occasional egg here and there but often days without eggs. :-( I wish I had 19 legbars hatching!! :-) Although I guess I was wanting to have a break from hatching! ha ha. did you get my PM?

Yes they are still laying. I need to advertise cream Legbar hatching eggs for sale. I have we'll over 30 growing out. If you get anyone needing cream Legbar eggs or chicks, please send them my way. :)
Not sure I want to grow all these baby's out..LOL
Sorry I didn't get back to your PM. I'm still trying to figure it out... I will call you.
I need to learn how to list eggs on here......Molly

Quote: super easy, you can also list them on ebay. i've done both and had really good hatching results from those eggs so the people were super happy. Auction prices have been going down quite a bit but still better than having too many birds to feed! :-). I've only seen a few people list them on here. you can either do it as an auction or a buy it now price. up to you. just look through some of the hatching egg ads and see what they look like and you will get a good idea of how to do it. usually they go anywhere from $4-8 per egg roughly, just depends on how many concurrent auctions. no worries about the pm, sent you another. maybe we can chat at some point today or over the weekend?

BLUE BARNEVELDERS

You had a nice hatch Molly! Check the wing tips in a few days for the blue coloring. Regular barnie chicks sometimes have a blue cast to their down but aren't blue of course. Blue wing tips are the first sign that I can tell by and then later they start to feather out blue. I had one cockerel that fooled me....I thought he was black until almost 4 weeks of age. He turned out to be a pretty shade of dark blue. Sexing by chick down isn't as accurate with the blues as with "pure" barnies. Girls will have light breasts too. I'm going to be working at bringing that trait back, but these things take time.

Also don't get rid of the blacks right away. Pick out the best quality blacks and use them for breeders. Since you don't have any pure barnies you won't have to worry about mixing them up. I just make sure I keep all mine banded and pretty much know everyone in the flock by sight. Some of my favorite pullets this year have been "blacks" from the blue project with nice sized pullets that have excellent lacing. There's no need to get rid of those genetics just because they are "plain" black. Splashes have the poorest lacing, but have had really nice bodies. The best part about splashes is that they will throw 100% blue when crossed with a black. But, I'll probably not be keeping my splash pullets this year because I really like their 2 blue brothers more.

Trisha

Edited to add: I haven't gotten a splash cockerel yet....all of the splashes have been pullets LOL.

Good Morning everyone! :D

It's such an ugly day today up here in Anderson. Very grey and dreary. I cannot wait for spring!

I moved my older brahmas (6-7 mnth) out of the backyard yesterday to the pasture where all my other pens are. They were definitely not feeling the move! :/
i had to take a section of my privacy fence down to get it out,and then put it right back up lol.

I'm happy how my breeding pens are coming out. I'll take some pictures after coffee to show you guys. (in kinda proud of it)
