Egg question- do the pullets need to lay for a couple months before getting bigger eggs? They still seem pretty small and some have been laying a month. What is the grams on an average non-Leghorn layer egg?
They will gradually get bigger. My Orps lay larger (though more oblong) than a grocery store egg. As for grams, not a clue - I don't weigh my eggs.

Oh and one last thing- so super excited. I found homes for ALL my extra cockerels. That will leave me with 3 cockerels - and if they cannot get along off to freezer camp for the Marans I chose to keep (for now). Anddddd 2 of my younger Orp pullets started laying. Sneaky little things! They are half the size of my big girls and started laying earlier! 24 weeks for these Orps and 31 weeks for the older Orps. Quite the spread in ages! Maybe the EEs might even kick some out. Fingers crossed!

Yay! Congratulations!

I don't weigh my eggs, but my girls have been laying for 11 weeks now and the eggs are still on the medium side. Except for my New Hampshire Red who has laid a large round egg from day one.

They all somewhat look like this. The more I look at better quality buff orp pics- the more I think it just might be normal and just have full crops from eating. I could be paranoid right now. Orps are def more blocky shaped than streamlined like some of the other breeds. I have been pouring over pics and I see some that look pretty similar.

I have a friend here in Antioch that raises Jersey Giants. She is always looking for homes for her extra boys. There are some of them on the farm with my Langshan boys.

I am thinking as long as they are not to mature they will be ok to stick together.
I am going to Woodland area Saturday I think ...

I hope so too! No pips yet! I will keep you posted.

Just got back from Shingletown. I dropped off the two TJs(Trader Joes) chickens to Amy Beth. She gave me a dozen Duck eggs and I had to explain(Promise?) my family that I would not hatch them.

I only thought about that a little I swear....

It was nice but I got up at 5 to bake and wound up finishing up the cooking up there too. I am quite tired.

Good night!

Bwahaha Ron. It could be fun to hatch them. You would get a fun mix! I have 5 different breeds and 3 different male breeds. Haha One is created so you could one with a Mohawk. :P Thanks for the reminder about using my convection. I put my sweet taters and stuffing in at once time and i did not have to cook it twice as long. For some reason I need to with standard oven. Hmm!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I don't think that they are sick or anything like that. I'm not an Orp person, but I checked the SOP and that artwork shows the underline as being like a bowl. The chest/breast is a rounded curve.

There's a judge that I'm always bugging with questions. I gather, from what I've heard from him, that chickens should have a flowing shape, instead of sharp angles, straight lines, or parts that look like they don't fit with the rest of the bird. I can't remember his exact words and I'm having a hard time explaining it. Debi, you were there- do you know what I'm trying to describe?

I thought maybe Mediterranean breeds were supposed to be more angular, since so many of the photos that you see of them show them with as birds with breasts that have straight outlines. But if you look at the SOP, even the Leghorns have rounded breasts that have a flowing shape to them.

Looking at my own birds, especially my Delawares, makes me so upset now. I keep looking for the rounded breast/outline and instead I see an upside down triangle shape.

If you get the APA SOP and start going to shows, it makes you start seeing things differently. AmyBeth, you already have an incredible eye for detail and seem to be a perfectionist, so that might help you.

If you want more info specifically on Orps, you might post on the Orp thread or on the Heritage Breed thread. The crowd there is not as friendly as here but have lots of knowledge & experience.
