Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great thanksgiving!
We got a surprise egg today! My f1 Olive Egger layed a surprisingly brown olive egg! I'm going to start my f2 project this week, useing her full brother and my Marans hens. I'll do a month or so of eggs then DH can live a life without Muffler ( he hates that roo, he really does)

I didn't think she was going to lay until next year, the egg was quite the surprise. My blue eggs always wash out on camera. and this olive egg seems to do the same. DH got a pic but its not really the right color.

Its kind of exciting, both the projects I started last year ( tuxedo quail, olive egger hens) have born fruit. Not complex ones by any means but still fun for a noob like myself.

Muffler, her brother whos a total ham and loves his picture taken ( if anyone is looking for a f1 roo, hes availible in jan)

Olive is in the middle surrounded by voratious Marans and an interpid Orphington.

Here is a bad pic of the egg, it looks just brown, but you can really see the blue shell in person. ( the box it is on is pink, that shows how bad my colors are)

My poor scalped hen is doing better. I'm debating putting is some young silkies in with her to give her some company. Ill see how she is doing in a few days, but now she is eating and drinking and her eye isn't swolen and she can see out of both, so im happy. Still don't know if it was a chicken attack, a turkey attack or some animal.
Whoa nice egg!! I'm sorry your hen was hurt but glad she is doing better! It's so good to hear from you!

Nice egg!!!

They are definitely entertaining. We are getting rid of satellite tv this week so I am truly excited to free up some time and spend more of it together with the kids and also with the animals. Saving $130 a month is a HUGE bonus too! We bought a Roku and we can access our Netflix and Hulu accounts through it. So I can still watch some of my favorite shows. Plus old ones- we are making our way through the Cosby Show as a family. My kids LOVE that show (we do too).

We got rid of our satellite a year or so ago. The Roku is awesome. We broke down and bought a digital antennae a few months ago (only $45.) so the DH could watch football. Don't miss those cable bills at all!

i don't have any tv reception at all (haven't for six years now!), just use the tv to watch DVDs -- or can stream movies on the computer or iPad -- but no tv shows, except for watching Jon Stewart online the next morning. now i'm delightfully oblivious about current tv shows and etc... my students find me horribly out of touch, but oh well.

We should buy one of those too. I would like to get the local channels sometimes. That would be nice!

Just wanted to let you all know that groworganic.com is having a 30% off almost everything this weekend. Sign up for their email newsletter and they will send you the code or just enter THANKSGIVING into the code box. I just ordered 10 lb. of chicken forage blend, a soil builder seed mix, some clover seeds, sme vegie seeds, and some flower seeds, My chickens love the forage blend but it is a warm weather mix so will plant it in the spring. I ordered the soil builder seed for this winter. I'm going to plant it in part of my backyard and then let the chickens into that area when it has grown high enough. I'm trying to do a modified paddock system in my yard. I don't have to worry about grass or weeds because the chickens have cleared the land for me.

Edited to let you know that the sale is over at 12 PST tonight.

Debi,

I am so glad you posted this! I have had this on my to-do list since Karen's party this summer and have never remembered to place my order. Thank you for sharing (and my birds send their thanks too)
