California - Northern

I think that Rhode Island is the one that REALLY needs to be split into geographic regions...

I'm surprised you would say that Jeremy. When you started the Bay Area thread you were asked, by Nifty, to join the Nor Cal thread and didn't and your thread is thriving. Threads are obviously not just for connecting to those that are close to you. BYC wouldn't be doing so well if that were the case. In my situation California is my neighbor and since Nevada has almost nothing in the way of breeders I travel to California a lot to meet these needs. I don't really care what part of California if it's birds I'm dying to get and it saves me a trip to the East coast, I'm happy!

Mickeymousears you should start a California thread! It is a great idea! I personally, would love to see one. Just post a link on this site so we can find it!

I wasn't asked by Rob to join the Northern California threads.

For me it is a way to build community, that's why I started the Bay Area thread. I knew there we a NorCal thread but I wanted something "a bit closer to home" that would allow me to connect with folks in the Bay, to connect with like minded people that I could ask to chicken sit if I needed to go away, or vice versa. It's hard to ask that of someone who lives down South in Riverside... so it makes sense to have different threads for different regions in a state that is so big.

Will the Northern California threads and Southern California threads be deleted then if a new "state-wide" thread is made? I don't know how happy that would make some people.

Arguing over something simply to argue doesn't make much sense to me... but oh well.

Kim, I won't be showing my duckies, I'm too paranoid about potential disease contraction from other birds.

Oh come on! Who was arguing? How many times have I seen you tell folks to not be so touchy over something you've said? I'm not trying to argue or take anything away from your thread or anybody elses, I just think it's silly to try to talk someone out of starting a general California thread when there are quite a few of us that would really enjoy a thread like that. Since the Bay Area thread does focus on community needs so much I can't imagine why it would bother you so much! Sheesh! Touchy touchy!

I think AAA did it

they couldn't fit the whole state on one map so they cut it in half; Northern & Southern.

I find the threads I go to first are the regionals (this one, northern cal, then wine country chicken chat on yahoo), and it's not nearly often enough any more.

Hugs to all, wherever you are!

Hi Laurieks!

Yea I haven't seen you on here in ages! I hang out on the Nevada thread mostly (yes only 1 thread for the whole state) after that it is the crochet thread and they are spread out all over the place. Great group of folks on there though. IDK, I like to hang out wherever I feel welcome.

Pretty much any group can accomplish that with a friendly attitude. I think it depends a lot on either the person that started the thread or the one that keeps it going. I like the threads that are friendly and upbeat. Don't even mind a good debate now and then just not crazy about folks that can't seem to state their opinions in a friendly way.

Luckily almost all the folks I've met here on BYC are very friendly and super easy going. I really would love to see a general California thread because I'm forever looking for something that's hard to find and would love to have all the folks in California as a resource. I don't even mind traveling a ways. Although the egg train that Wolftracks is organizing would also be a great resource for this kind of thing. I actually wouldn't mind traveling to Arizona, Utah or Oregon either if I could get my hands on a great breeder.

Right now I am concentrating on FBCMs but my focus is egg color with other SOP for this breed being less important to me. I have had such bad luck with shipped eggs that I'm thinking of driving all the way to Michigan for some gorgeous dark egg layers! So you can see why the west would be preferable.

Still those super dark, maroon tinged eggs of Wynette's (from Adamson Acres) sure do tempt me into taking that long road trip!

Hi Sunny,
I too am trying to get darker eggs & have been successful having a couple of breeders ship chicks to me instead of hatching eggs. I have been hatching eggs since Feb of this year with some success & alot of failure on shipped eggs. My first successful hatch was Feb 21 from eggs given to me from Harris5 in Colfax (or near there). She brought them to me at the Stockton show on Jan 29th & I came home & put them in my new incubator. I believe I got 9 out of a dozen. Nice dark eggs (darker than mine), feathered shanks & they are growing out nicely. She has BCMs & BlueCMs I think but my only Blue one died early. She used to have Golden Cuckoos too but I haven't talked to her in quite awhile so I don't know if she ended up keeping them or not.
Good luck with your search.

Thank you Karen! I appreciate the info! Do you know where her eggs rate on the marans' color scale? ~ Never mind, found her. Her egg color is very nice! I'll shoot her a pm. Just found out I'll also be getting some chicks from Wynette in spring! I'm so excited about this breed! I loved all my marans but I'm so ready to concentrate on the Black coppers.

Thanks for the link Cheryl!
