Gorgeous!

A friend of mine brought me this roo from the local AC. He is quite pretty! Most agree that he is a Spangled Hamburg/mix. What do you think?

LOL I just like pretty birds and eggs Honestly, she didn't tell me anything about him. All she said was "want a rooster?". I said SURE! and a few days later she brought him home from work.

Ok, that chiken looks like he is wearing a rubber hat, that is NOT a comb.

I heard you need a big comb for fertility, those sperm must be double barreled.
( I wonder if that is a family friendly word)

Are you nervous about ordering from them? I thought I read that some people haven't gotten their orders months later?

Funny, I just got a letter from Sandhill today. They are giving me a tentative ship date in April 2013 for the birds I ordered in May 2012.

I'm sorry. Heavy picture alert. I discovered today that my black orp/marans mix girl- Black Betty and my handsome Marans cockerel are extremely sweet on each other. They are always hanging out together, he makes purr noises when she is with the rest of the harem (it's not his harem) and she runs for him, he shows her tidbits by tapping the ground with his beak and she eats. If she wonders off he panics and looks for her and goes to her. If she is with the harem, he pines for her and stares at her form a distance. I am SO not kidding. My kids are so enamored with the whole Disney movie playing out. LOL Is that normal? He isn't even mating her, just wooing and being sweet.

Well Betty hangs out with him Gary (my Marans) and my BO fella named Chief is the 3rd wheel. When Gary wasn't looking hornball Chief hopped on her. Super ticked off Gary. And here are the pictures. I sat with a zoom lens watching all the chickens for about 30 minutes and it's amazing I caught this drama!









Betty totally took off and ran back to the harem.

And now look at Gary...staring after. I am so not making this up!
Here he is looking sad towards her...



And you can see she went back to the group.



And earlier...you can see how Foghorn (my bantam rooster) feels about Gary's love interest in Betty. Not thrilled at all. Betty apparently does NOT care because she went with Gary anyway. It's like a chicken soap opera!

Black Betty. I know she is a mix but I simply adore this pullet. Love love love her. She is as fluffy as the older Buffs and she is 2 months younger!

Not only did we have a record storm yesterday BUT by the days end we had 11 duck eggs ( we only have 11 female ducks) which means ALL my ducks are now laying. Yessss! Plus 4 chicken eggs...which means all 4 of my only laying chickens laid an egg. How crazy is that!

I got ONE egg today.

Chickens are healthier foraging for part of their diet and that involves eating off the ground.
