I went to the feed store yesterday and they had so many chicks. Russian Orloffs, Buckeyes, Black sex links, red laced Wyandotte, and Barred Rocks. Strange the chicks they end up with, something different every time I go. They advertise 96% hens so I guess that's why.

Edited to add the feed store in Sac on Bradshaw has a great variety, but usually they have the majority of the same ones in stock.

Good news! The last chick to hatch that was stuck in the shell after zipping is doing very well today!

I was worried that I was going to lose that one.

Oddly, I was very happy to see a healthy poop when I was doing a health check today.

going to my daughters 5 year old birthday today. her Birthday is the 15th. We are having it early due to being to close to Christmas. Plus with the pending move it is just too much.

It's ok, I judge myself about it too. I am splitting the time up so they are not getting the light all winter. I will also end it as soon as the other pens start laying again.

I did a lot of research on this last year and the one thing that swayed me was the fact that Red Jungle Fowl do not take a break in the winter because they have no winter down in the Jungle where they are from. Molting is their break and they still molt with the lights on. I had one start this week. I bet they take a much shorter break down in Cabo too.

Well I prefer not to do lights. I want to be 'natural' as possible. But honestly if it came down to me buying store eggs or turning on lights...I am turning my lights on. My chickens are still treat a million times better than those chickens that lay the store eggs with or without lights. I am most grateful that the Orps are laying and my ducks apparently do not need lights right now. I'm swimming in eggs right now. I hope I still have this problem next year. If I ended up needing lights- I would like to have a separate coop for my egg layers than I am not breeding into one of my breeding breeds- so that way I am lighting only my layers not my breeders. One day. LOL Lots of plans...we'll see how it all turns out. I am glad you are getting eggs though- I would feel so sad if I had to buy eggs from the store.
