Quote: Yeah and after all the rain, everything is iced. Fell on my steps this morning - got down them fine, but coming back up didn't go so well. I'm waiting for it to get above freezing before I thaw the waterers - don't want to do it twice.
Wow, is it ever! At first I thought it snowed and then realized it was just all frozen! What a beautiful morning! Hope you didn't hurt anything when you fell....why does it hurt so much more when you're an adult!

My weather app says it's going to start raining here by noon and turn to snow at 3pm.....but there's not a cloud in the sky....which is a good segway to my next response....

Quote: Evidently I can't even remember it was Chooklets, not Chooks! I'm going to say I'm not only not organized anymore....I can't remember chicken poo!

I bet there is an app for that so that you can save the information in the Cloud!....

I have a cloud but I have no clue which one it is....and there's not a cloud in the sky right now so I'm sure I don't have access to it!

Really though, I have that cloud thing but haven't had the time to figure out how that works....but I send stuff to it!

To my surprise this morning, as I'm wondering if the chickens water froze and watching the puppy slide around on the deck I see about a dozen of my chickens warming themselves in the sun!!!!

I forgot to close them in last night! I sure hope the rest are OK and it was too cold for predators to wander about last night.

PS what do you do with quail? Meat and eggs?
Yes! Quail is very Tasty and the eggs are prized by Chefs.

On Iron Chef America, one of the competitors often cooks a Quail egg to put on top of something.

Also, the Coturnix Quails are ready to lay eggs in 6 weeks.

That is exactly how it works! Its just big storage that is not on your computer and accessible. I think of it as a big hard drive in the sky. There is a good short story in there somewhere.

Happy belated bday to anyone that I missed :)

Yep. 8 to 10 weeks from egg to table. If you skin them they are fast to process. Slow to eat however unless you do some deboning. But slow to eat is good!

Sally Sunshine on the NYD Hatch-a-long thread had chickens eat the spray foam off of their hot tub. They died and someone posted that one of theirs ate it and it dissolved the hens tongue. It was dead the next morning.

The foam kills them fairly quickly it seems.

I am going to get some Organic Alfalfa pellets and see how it works.
That sounds just horrible!!!

We eat their eggs all the time. Over the holidays I deviled large plates of them for two different parties, they were a huge hit. As soon as I find time, I have a few to butcher (extra boys). My SIL has asked me to raise a batch for him, we're going to trade for pork from one of the grandkids hogs.

I give my hens half a cabbage or a green leafy veggie like kale each day. Today I gave them the solid left over from juicing carrots.

I am interested in how much alfalfa to give them. The person that does this re hydrates them with water.

I wish my girls would eat the solids from juicing! They won't even look at them. I thought they would really like them.

Quote: I can tell by the eggs which ones eat the greens I put out. The only one that does not is Maranda, my Blue Marans. Her yolks are a lot more yellow compared to the others. I start them out eating veggies when they are about 6 weeks old. I put broccoli and etc into the food processor and chop it up for them. I put the juicing solids out in the morning and it was all gone by the time I got home. It is really funny to see them grab a Kale leaf and run off with it!

Mine seem to eat everything. They really go crazy for grass clippings from the front yard too(I do not use pesticides so the clippings are safe).

Yours might eat it if you mix it with something. I Gave them Carrot and Orange pulp yesterday.

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to get a Livestock Guardian Dog pup for my farm from a town in Northern California by Redding. I am in San Diego and am looking to train/ caravan this guy down here. It'll be in about 8 weeks from now. If anyone can help or has any ideas can you please PM me.

Thanks!
We got ours from a guy in Tehachapi, but since we are not in that area anymore, I have no clue when he will have pups again.

Quote: Yes it does sound horrible. I am trying to make my yard safe for mine. I do worry about foam packing nuggets blowing into the yard. Other things like that too. I was worried last year when we hired painters. I guess the paint is not that toxic to them.
