Jason and Ron,

Took more pictures yesterday of the OE #1 project offspring. I thought you would appreciate pictures since you both have younger birds. Sorry the pictures are soo bad. He looks alot more like a crele pene (mom) to me than Cream Legbar (dad). There is a chance his mom could be Partridge Pene, but those white legs scream Crele, don't you think? I no longer have the Part. Pene with this group so from now on there won't be any question who the mom is.

Here is a picture of the purebred Crele Pene rooster I lost last year. I wish I had photos of him as a juvie to compare. I remember it took forever for his tail to grow this big. Oh, I miss that boy.

Here are one of the OE #1 pullets. She is only 10 weeks. Ron, how old are your girls? About the same age if I remember.

Deann,

At Stockton I heard Jason say if I hatched a roo, it was going to you. After hearing how to sex the hatchlings, I'm pretty sure the first chick is a boy.

Oh, too bad. I wish it was a girl for Jason. I will happily take him. I lost my CP roo last year and still miss him. boo hoo Now, just need to figure out how to get him.

I'm wondering if any norcal locals can help me find some good laying hens. I just want 2-3 at most. I will go as far south as Sac & north up to Grass Valley...maybe a little higher :) I need eggs!

I'm so happy to say we just brought home 3 new ladies !! :) 2 Bovans Brown- Lily & Lola and a gorgeous, sassy Ameracauna that I named Flossie after my great-aunt! Lily is also a name of a great-aunt!..lol. I will take pics tomorrow. I hope all 5 get along. I just went out & found the 3 new girls in Ginger's nesting box all huddled together, but I couldn't find Ginger! I finally found her on the coop door, hiding up top :(. I took the girls out & placed them on the roost. I made them their own nesting box. I hope it doesn't made Ginger too upset; she's the biggest though. I guess they will work it out.

The "wet" hatch is 55%. Less than that traditional amount is a dry hatch. If you live in a dry place, then there is not enough humidity in the air to keep the correct humidity for hatching. For example, the deep south in the summer, without adding water you would have about 40% without adding water. Here in CA, and not on the north coast, we do not have enough humidity for hatching without adding water. The conditions change with the seasons too so you have to change the amount of water added to get to the correct humidity.

You can find a lot more information by clicking the link in my signature. There is also a chart that shows air cell development on days 7, 14 and 18. Humidity is supposed to be adjusted based on the air cell size on those dates.

For the very scientific, you can also weigh the eggs and chart its weight loss. Based on the % of weight loss, humidity is adjusted up and down in the incubator. Still it works to pick an humidity and then raise or lower it based on if the chicks are covered by an amber liquid or not. If so, raise the humidify 5% next time.

Woohoo!!! The bator is full & here's my test egg!!! FERTILE!!!!! Yes! Can't wait :) One more week until 2 go to the hatch box :)!!!
