My broody hatched 1 chick. It pipped on Monday night. Today, the chick was out from under mom, but she would not leave the nest, so I pulled her out to check the other 2 eggs. They did not develop :( Glad I checked though! I would be heart broke if this sweet little thing died because mom was waiting on the other eggs!

ETA: I just called 3 local feed stores to see if anyone had chicks. The soonest will be Friday. I thought I MIGHT have better luck grafting a couple to her, if i could get some today. Thoughts?

Yay for the Broody!

If you can't find any before Friday, try slipping them under the Mom on Friday night.

Ron, you don't think Friday is too long? I am not really prepared to have to brood chicks right now if she rejects them, KWIM!

Quote: I would give it a shot!

My Broody was not good but she was a young pullet. I would have given her more time with the chicks but it was going to freeze that night.

That's just it. This is her first time. She is not quite a year old yet, so I have been trying to keep a close eye on her. So far, though, she is definitely taking care of Bert! Hoping that name will evolve into Berta, not dinner.

The worst would be if she attacked the new chicks. I do not think that will happen. She may have trouble keeping them under her but she is doing ok with the one. I think she will be fine.

That is my fear. I am glad that I have a day or so to think on it. Since they are arriving on Friday at the feed store, they should be pretty close in age. Would you explain to me why she might have trouble keeping them under her?
