And I won't bore you with a lot of personal stuff but my husband has had some heart issues lately and earlier this week he was in the hospital with it. So I've been really preoccupied physically and mentally. The weekend was just busy and then this all happened. I will try to keep up now though. Everything seems to be ok for now.

I can only fathom the stress you must be going through. Heart problems are no joke! If you ever need to vent, I, and from the looks of it, we are all here to lend a shoulder when needed!

would the fungus grow in the sand? My open coop has wet sand on the ground when it rains. If the coop is a open air coop it should ventilate enough?

Great advice. Look down the throat to see if there is anything there. It could be coincidence but with two giving wormer and having the same symptoms after treatment the cause is likely to be the worm treatment. Hopefully the coughing will go away soon.

Order the Denegard and treat like chickee said with ACV. The watery eyes and nasal discharge are illness symptoms, either viral or bacterial. The advice with respiratory illness with chickens is to treat it quickly and separate those with symptoms.

I have a good feeling about your chickens recovering quickly!

Not able to get denegard but got duramycin-10.... And sav-a-chick probiotic. Will that be good to start?

You are in our thoughts . Did he have that bad flu that went around? I had been coughing for 3 weeks then got 4 days of 104 fever. I took fever reducers and got it down to 101. After it broke I had damaged ligaments in and around my rib cage. I thought I was going to have a heart attack and was in and out of the hospital having it checked. No heart issues but the pain was similar to what felt like was going to be.
I am not sure if he is having those kinds of issues but wanted to say it.

You are not supposed to use other antibiotics with Denegard, so if you decide to use the Duramycin-10 (It really does not work like Denegard) you shouldn't use the Denegard. I would wait and use the Denegard.

How does Sulmet or generic Sulmetar ? Compare. Our Vet had told us that was good for respitory issues it is also really good for Coccid. Avc is good to use as well as Vitamins

Amy, you do need to get rid of him. The roo jumping up to spur you will only catch you in the leg, painful but no great damage. With a little one, if they jump up to spur, they can catch them in the face. It's not worth the danger, there are too many gentlemanly roosters out there.


I was going to ask you how they were doing. Just make sure you take care of them before going near any suspected ill birds. Always make sure you have washed and changed your clothes after taking care of the sick birds and before going back to the little ones. It also wouldn't hurt to give the chicks something like Sav-a-Chick in their water, can't hurt and can only help.

I'm sorry to hear that, but glad that he's ok now. I'm probably the most depressing person on the thread lol. Talking about it will probably help you not be so stressed out.

Amy, so sorry to hear about your husband's health issues. I'm glad that he is doing better. And don't worry about boring us with life details. We are here to support you even if it is only to listen and pray. We all have more in common than just chickens!

Thanks everyone! My hubby and I are just entering our mid30s so this was our first big reminder that we aren't 20 anymore. Not that 35 is 80 or anything lol. But certainly not 20. haha!

My husband had to go to the ER because his heart was racing and skipping beats. It's not the first time, but the previous times had been mild and explained away as stress. This time it was really bad. Heart rate was 150 when he was resting. Heart not even beating- just quivering. I t took them hours to even get it down to the 90s. He felt like crap. He was in Chico because that's where he works and we live in Redding. I have 4 kids with me all day so I could drop it all and go be with them. It took hours to arrange someone to stay with the kids to I could go. Anyhow. He is on meds to control for now. We have to follow up with his dr then eventually a cardiologist. The ER drs argued whether he has SVT or A Fib. Was a little scary I won't lie. He is home for the week just to catch up on rest and get back to work on a good foot.

I guess the timing is good because we have 3 waterfowl down with bumblefoot. We're going to have to hit them all at once. Not going to be a fun day. Let alone treat ducks and a goose and expect them to keep their bandage on? haha! right.

That's a thought. I have been on the lookout and haven't noticed any mold or fungus. The coop didn't have a moisture problem until after the diarrhea started, so don't think it was the original cause, but may be a secondary issue. Also, they don't go in the sandy section under the roosts (not even to eat the few soft eggs) and it acts as a large litter box that I scoop frequently. The coop is open to the run and they always go outside in the run or in their chicken yard when not roosting or laying. No automatic waterers, and food and water is portioned out daily, so nothing sits around. The birds are seemingly healthy, very active and eating a lot and still laying, just less frequently (50%+ less) than a month ago, which is why I suspected worms. They were just dosed with Ivermectin and second treatment of Valbazen. Would a fungal infection make them lethargic and puffy or would they still be active? Do you think the Denagard would work for a fungal infection, just in case?

Thanks for helping with some new ideas. Heaven help me if this chronic diarrhea is the new normal!

Wow, that is scarey. Glad to hear they were able to bring it down and control it, and I sure hope they can get it figured out so you don't have this kind of scare again!
