My contractor is starting the duck pond project today.

It's going to be a 10' by 15' rectangle, plumbed for easy draining & cleaning. He's building it partially above ground (less digging to do) out of pressure treated lumber. We've planned for it to be between two and two-and-a-half feet deep. The flock of ducks and both ganders will be able to SWIM in more than just circles, as they currently do in the round 300 gallon stock tank.

That is a good question. Inquiring minds want to know! I've seen pullet chicks for sale on craigslist for $45 for a day old while the boys are only $10. Greenfire sells them for $59 for day old pullets and $19 for day old cockerels. I have fallen in love with the 3 pullets that I have and I know that I can get a cockerel for free or less than $10. But I would love to hatch out a few more or add 2 or 3 more pullets to the flock. Those of you who have these sought after breeds, how do you decide on pricing?

How many people are using sand??? I just started considering this and I am considering it pretty hard. Plus I already bought some granulated Sweet PDZ because I figured the powder would just be too dusty, and I would think they would mix together pretty well. I can't imagine I will be able to sift out any Quail poo because it is just too small. But the shavings.... pretty stinky pretty fast.

If you find you can actually sift out any "organic material" let me know.

I would think something with a screen on it might work, but I haven't opened the PDZ to see how big it is.

I am considering sand for the chicken coop too along with a PDZ poop board. I so wish I had a handy man around to help with this. I am procrastinating because it is just beyond my knowledge level! UGH!

oh me me me. I use sand in my open coop. it is great. when it gets wet it dries quick and is easy to clean

My contractor is a General Contractor; he's the same one who built my deck, took out a window and installed a single French style door onto the deck, built my pergola, garden fence, transmorgrified the dilapidated carport into the chicken coop, ran water to it and upgraded the ectricity in it, installed the auto chicken door, my electronic pet door, painted the house, and screened the front porch for me. Buncha stuff.

He's not a landscape contractor but has a great eye and does exemplary work. He lives in Outingdale and does a lot of work for Ed Keller & Associates, the real estate agency which handled my purchase of my property. (He also appeared at the Board of Supervisors meeting and Admin Hearing on my behalf during the Great Chicken War of Somerset.)

I use sand in my run and outdoor brooder/grow out area. I am trying it in an indoor brooder with the quail. I had them on paper towels for the first week and was at the point of changing them to pine shavings when I decided to try sand. If it works well and I can figure out how to easily scoop the poop out of it, I'm going to switch to sand in my other brooders. I still use pine shavings on linoleum in my coop but I might think about switching to sand in there, too.
