I think wolftracks (Kim) on the California (Not Northern) thread has some. She is in Modesto. Not sure what color hers are though.

Ok. So I'm really questioning the amount of stress and work the wafer in my bator gives me. BUT it is economical in comparison... What do you think? I may chuck this styrofoam mommy soon if I can settle on a replacement.
Two years ago a coyote pack continued to attack my coop and run, digging a hole almost completely across and under the wired floor! We set rat traps every two feet around the perimeter . Three nights of hearing their yips and high tailing it out of there was all it took. They were easier than the bears! I despise the raccoons the most though... Good luck!

Way out of my quail league..... would the eggs fit in a chicken egg turner? I sort of like the smaller eggs, and haven't yet thought about using them for meat. I just have a hard time snuffing the life out of something. Even a bug....

When you get them you will have to share pictures. I want to see what all your excitement is about.

Well I didn't think my bator sucked, but I am maybe reevaluating that. I think maybe I suck more than it. I just wasn't monitoring it the way I should. I became complacent in thinking the temp gauge was still reading accurately.

I am going to lock it down tonight and candle everything. I had one blood ring with veins a while back and I do think that it gave up, so I will be down to 36. The shipped ones are still weird. If I didn't bake them we will know in the next couple of days.

WHOOOOooo Hooooooo! How many eggs did you set total? I can't remember. What day was that? 20 or 21?

I noticed that after they started to lay eggs, or right before that actually they calmed down a bit.

Moles, Voles, Gophers, Ground Squirrels and Bugs Bunny.

What a GOOOooood Kitty. He is invaluable if he is really that good of a rodent getter.

so how big is that? I assume 2x2 means to incubating trays and two hatching trays.

I'm setting Polish in the next couple of days and I get white with a little bit of splash. I'm actually trying for more splash but so far they look like this, all the ones from her look just like her.

I would stare at that girl for hours if I owned her! She is amazing! I'm so glad I got to see her and there's no doubt why she made it to the winners table! She's GO GESS!

Oh how wonderful that you have eggs soon! I do not know where you are located. I would need a hen for sure as I live in Sierra Springs, an association. I am not sure how many chickens I am allowed but I live on a private road so no one comes up here. I am certainly willing to wait for one or two.

Our landlord is giving me ulcers. He showed up again and is working on this falling down little house (used to be a shed) right next to ours that he used to rent out. It seriously has holes in the walls. And instead of all the things that need done here (new windows (some are broken or stuck open/closed)), a water heater that works, etc he's getting that ready to rent, apparently? We really need to move but I have yet to see anything on craigslist that will accept chickens.

The bright side, I guess, is we can stay here until we do find something that will allow us to bring out chickens. But it's terrible to feel uncomfortable in your own home, which I do now, especially with him showing up once or twice a week and spending all day 10 ft from my front door.

I have a broody EE that's been sitting on 5 of my silkie eggs for 2 weeks now. She was broody and I figured I've got these fertile eggs just sitting here -so good timing! They should hatch next Friday.
Wellllllllll, the problem is that I don't trust her as a first time Momma, especially to my silkie babies. I had planned to separate them and hand raise the babies anyway (eventually adding them to my silkie pens). Would it be too terrible for her if I stuck her in a broody-breaker and hatched the chicks in one of my incubators?

I don't want to traumatize her for the rest of her chicken life but maybe chickens really don't care?

I was wondering the same thing. I have a broody Silkie sitting on 6 eggs, and I have more eggs in my incubator. When they hatch I want to put all the chicks together in the brooder, but I don't to traumatize the Mama.

Chickens have very short term memories. If you don't mind breaking a chicken of broody then she will soon forget if you can break her. If you can't ... some keep trying until they have chicks. Each bird is different. But they will forgive you if you feed them mealworms...

sad to report my first predator loss here: one of the light sussex girls must have been busy dustbathing or something when i put them away last night (i'd had a rather hideous day at work and was undoubtedly not paying attention like i should), as today there are a lot of white feathers scattered along a trail of trampled-down trail into the meadow grass... and then nothing. poor girl. (although now i have a better sense of just how effectively predator-proof the coop is!)
