And then there were 2. I hatched 8 ducks...rehomed 6- 3 families later. :D

Kept 2 and turns out one is a beloved Appleyard! Puts that girl laying around 16 weeks or something crazy. WOOT!
Wow that's so young! That's awesome!

In news from the Shriners Hospital...Curly can now stroll around (OK lurch) and get both food and water all on her own! without toppling headfirst.

This is the hugest milestone! I feel confident that she has turned the corner.

Speaking of corners, last night she backed herself into one and got stuck facing out. Today she owns the orthopedic ward.
Yay Curly! You can do it!

Pickles (one in front) and Jojo (crested in back). That's all we have left! Yay!
Sweetest. Picture. Ever.

So far most of the black chicken breeds I've seen have white on them as chicks. It's very odd! lol Australorps do it too.

Very strange. I really like this girl but I just don't want a "plain" colored chicken in my flock. And if my mom wants an EE or chocolate layer then I really can't keep her! Why do the boring colored chicks have to have the best personalities!?

BCollie - I don't think anyone would freak out if you posted a picture. You would be able to tell if the chicks are puffed up. They look like they have way more fur than the other chicks.. almost like they were inflated a little bit.

I really don't want to post a dead chick picture here... :( Could I send it to you over private message, maybe?

My two Light Brahmas look puffy, but I assumed that is normal for them since they grow up to look like big fatties?

(this was chick #1 on day 1)

(this was chick #2 yesterday)

Feel free to send it to me. I sound like a freak asking for dead animal pictures huh? My email is [email protected] if you can't send it over PM. Those chicks look normal to me. The first time I dealt with cocci I was so nervous because I didn't think I'd recognize the poofiness but it was clear who was uncomfortably puffy compared to the others. I recognized it instantly both times. If you're really scared that it may be something contagious, you can send the dead chick into UC Davis for a necropsy. It's free (except shipping). If you think you're going to do it, put the little guy in the freezer ASAP so he doesn't start decomposing.

Thank you! <3

My favorite hen is Betty. She is all black. And I think she is amazing. :D
Most of my welsummers lay in the 24-36 week range, but yes, I did have one that kept me hanging for 11 months. She then laid for 3 months and went broody.

Absolutely precious.

They look just fine. Brahma's are a stocky breed.
Thanks!

We are considering joining 4H for our 11 year old daughter. Is anyone in 4H (or has been) and can tell us if it was a good experience for them?

We lived and breathed 4-H for ten years while my son was growing up. He was in nearly every animal project (no beef) and I was the project leader for several projects and resource leader for rabbits. I could not speak more highly for any youth program. The confidence and responsibility it teaches is invaluable. I'm still involved with Master Showmanship at the CA State Fair every year and the knowledge bowl in Cavies. This year I have contracted to oversee the youth poultry show. If you come to the State Fair, the chicks hatching in the nursery will all be my babies

Yup, they're all Holderead babies. That was where all my son's waterfowl came from when he was in 4H, so it was a natural to go back to them.

Silky ducks are fluffy feathered, not like a Silkie chicken (maybe that's why they spelled it different,

), but fluffy. They are bantams, about 1.5 pounds. I got a black, a snowy and four grays (mallard coloring).

Black chickens are generally black and white as chicks (there are some exceptions).

Yes folks , that's ding dong's ( me) bator with a few to many drops of food coloring in trough #1!!! I hope it's fine cause "too late now" . makes me question how sterile the foam is though . I spray them down with biokleen after hatching... But the dye went ALL the way through. Maybe I should start saving for that nifty $$$ bator with the humidity pump!?!

I need some affirmation. I just culled Gary. Many of you recall who he is. Only the neatest rooster ever...gone mean on me. I never did anything to him but over the months it's escalated. The more I chased him off, or put him in penned up time out...the more he seemed determined to stalk me. He only sometimes went after my 9 year old son but completely left my 11, 6 and 4 year olds alone. He also did not go after my hubby or mil. It was getting so bad we were penning him up daily just so I could go outside (we free range). Culling him has my 6 year old messed up and my 11 year old is being fake stoic - he ADORED that rooster. Like...loved him. I feel like a horrible person for doing it. I feel like a horrible person that I can even do it. Who can do that?? Me. No one else in my house. Not husband, not mother in law...nope just Amy. And it's not fun, I don't enjoy and I want to barf. Killing for the table is one thing...this was not that. I just feel rotten. But I know I could not give him away- he could be mean to someone else. I couldn't keep him- he was growing spurs. I wouldn't have a purpose for him- can't breed him, can't let him be with the others (or he'd get me). I swear when I was holding him he knew. He kept staring at my face. It was SO weird. Can I just skip to bedtime? I still have to teach Wednesday church to a room full of toddlers. So not feeling it- probably be good for me though. Thanks for listening. <3
