Thanks for all the pro-tips on daily chicken treats, now to see how many of the options I can find locally available and reasonably priced! I've been holding off a bit on the BOSS because the Sebrights were so tiny, but they're definitely big enough to swallow them now. I have oyster shells planned (my mom actually had a bag of whole oyster shells around her house in Oregon for decorative purposes, and brought them to me last time she visited), but since I still have one rooster I'll make that available separately instead of mixing it into the food.

Congrats Chickee on your Khaki Quail d'Anvers! Can't wait to see photos of them (and all the others) when they're feathered out, I've never even heard of "Khaki Quail" color. Are you planning to show any of your d'Anvers, or just breed and keep as pets? Also I don't know why I wasn't already subscribed to the d'Anver thread!

The Flax needs to be the ground kind. The seeds just pass through their systems, so aren't much benefit. Besides the ground Flax, some other nutritious foods I add to the Flock Raiser are: Ground Kelp, Alfalfa leaves (I buy alfalfa leaf tea at the health food store) red pepper flakes, black oil sunflower seeds, old fashioned Quaker oats and garlic granules. I like to give my chicks a whole 7 grain cereal (no soy or corn) I also buy at the health food store.

Thought this would interest you since you love the d'Anvers. I posted pictures of them on the d'Anver thread and the breeder told me the two I thought were Dun Quail are actually the VERY RARE "Khaki" Quail color and I was very lucky to get them!!! I am very excited because this is the color I wanted, but didn't expect to get! It would be like getting a splash colored bird from a blue x blue breeding but the likely hood would be a lot slimmer.

One of my Australorp girls growls and makes her feathers stand on end whenever anyone pokes their head even into the run when she is on the nest (where she spends a good hour + a day) but that is the only sign of broodiness out of any of them. Hoping that my all of my new girls will be broody at some point or other but they are just little or still in the egg now.

Do you have any that are laying eggs for you now?

In chick news I have none other than they really like yogurt!!
I have had a bunch do that and not go broody. The Production Reds do that.

hrm, if there are a lot of 4h people maybe ill bring some silkies. It will all depends on if Im feeling motivated, it is 2 hrs away. But there is NOTHING like it here. I was feeling a little freaked out about all the quail I have ( remind me not to save stuff for people!) but mArio thinks we should just process any we dont sell and is not excited about going and selling quail.

On the funny side, I gave the second littleist cage of chicks and quail fermented feed just now for the first time. They have not tried to eat it out of the bowl, but one quail IS trying to bath in it and threw it EVERYWHERE... and they are eating it off the walls of the aquarium with MUCH enthusiam.

In sadder news, we had to cull the turkey. ON closer isnpection she had something else wrong with her legs, and could not put weight on one of them. I had een holding her to keep her legs in place at night before i went to bed, and petting her to sleep. I bawled like a baby, im not handling this one well :(.

i have five girls that are broody and/or with chicks, and seven that aren't -- but egg-laying production from those seven has fallen WAY off in recent weeks -- some combination of all the broody/chick action (and broodies taking up all the favorite nests & hissing at anyone that tried to lay in them, although at least one a day has been laying in the SPPR's nest all through her broodiness), the predator that got one light sussex a week or so ago (accidentally got left outside the run at night), those awful hot dry winds we were having, etc etc... through whatever combination of things that are upsetting the layers, i've only been getting 2-3 eggs per day, and one windy day over the weekend had NONE. hoping once the babies hatch, things will start getting back to normal?

and the two-week-olds are totally free-ranging with the big flock today (with their mama) -- will try to get some pictures!

two new mamas today!

Frances with one of her four foster araucana chicks -- she's adopted them without any trouble.
10 whole minutes of rain this morning at 4am!!! Woo Hoo! At least the girls slept through their first introduction to 'weather' in the new coop.....

"I only count 4, where is my chicken?"

"Dudes, I got your back."
SO CUTE! Oh my goodness. Almost enough to make me want a dog.

So sorry about your turkey, Shantih

Give yourself some time. The show sounds fun! I'd be tempted to go if I didn't think I'd make a mistake and bring home some more chickens. Although I could bring the little mutt chicks we hatched. I wonder if anyone would buy them. We went to Chicken Que last weekend, it was really fun!! The silkies we got from you (and giant Marans boy) are doing well. They are so funny - they're in that terribly awkward stage where their bodies are giant poofs and their heads are teeny tiny.

Ron, the babies you gave us are doing great! Although the blue egg layer (who is beautiful! We love her) is still having poopy bun issues. I just mixed some more probiotics into their water and will pick up some more yogurt for them. I think the partially blind one is a boy (90% sure) but as long as he plays nice he should be very happy here. They're such sweet chicks, they love each other so much!

just visited Speedy again, she'd gotten off the nest briefly for a snack, and she has FOUR chicks that have already hatched (out of nine eggs) -- three blackish, one chipmunky -- and i could see at least one of the bresse eggs has pipped, too. hooray!!!

chiqita, any detail on those icelandic surprises? it seems like one of the black chicks has dark legs, is that a marans (it looks like only one of the 2 marans eggs has hatched so far, the other seemed to still be intact -- her nest is hard to reach, so can't be sure) -- at least one of the other two dark chicks has more yellowy legs.

and condolences for the turkey!

If a seasoned pro like you still bawls like a baby I have no hope of ever getting over it!

I am happy to hear that they are ok! I did not want to break them up since they hatched together. The Pasty butt should stop soon. Is the Blue egg layer growing out feathers and getting bigger?
