So.... I had 2 of the 3 BLRW chicks hatch. One yesterday evening, and one this afternoon. The third pipped yesterday, and I was keeping an eye on it, but some time last night it flipped it's self around in the shell and drowned.

When I saw it this morning I tried to help, but it was too late. That was the one with the worst air cell. It was really high on one side, and dipped down past the middle on the other. At least I have the two. #1 was much happier when #2 arrived.

So sad when they do not make it out of the shell.

So sorry about your gosling order. Farmers feed and supplyin gilroy has Toulouse. You could check with them? They are flakes but might have some babies sitting around.

Also call Metzger in case they have over hatches.

Thanks I like the idea of .50 for a carton and appreciate ALL the feedback. people here pay 2.50-3.00 for home grown fresh eggs which is cheaper than cage free eggs in the store...makes no sense but that's what it is. I am excited about selling hatching eggs but want to be sure I don't mislead anyone. I loved the anticipation of ordering mixed orders of eggs and not knowing exactly what I would be getting. It added to the fun.

I stopped adding .50 (or discounting .50) if they returned the carton when I found I could buy them for .07 from one of the sponsors here, The Egg Carton store. You get nice, sturdy cartons that talk about small farm chickens and you don't have ratty old cartons that are embarrassing to put your pretty eggs in.....and you can pocket the .43!

oops, forgot to say, I sell mine for $4 dozen.

I stopped adding .50 (or discounting .50) if they returned the carton when I found I could buy them for .07 from one of the sponsors here, The Egg Carton store. You get nice, sturdy cartons that talk about small farm chickens and you don't have ratty old cartons that are embarrassing to put your pretty eggs in.....and you can pocket the .43!

home from work and coming down with a cold, nice timing right at the end of the semester!  and i was feeling quite worried about the little scalped chick, but it is still eating and pecking around their enclosure, seems utterly unbothered by its wound -- so strange!  i had been thinking, if it was suffering, that i should euthanize it, but now will wait a little longer to see how it does.  i can't see how it will ever have feathers on its head, though!

oh and i got Frances and her six chicks moved to an enclosure in the main run, so they are out of the nesting boxes & have easy access to food and water and sunshine in the morning.  relieved that they have settled in to their new spot!

I has this happen to 2 chicks last year one was a New Hampshire girl and one was a barred rock boy. I separated them two And fed them reg chick feed with some red worms from my worm bins and they healed up. Like you said I don't know how but they did get some feathers back. The roo is in roo heaven because we ate him but the nh girl is healthy and happy and laying eggs she does have a scar and I call her princess because the scar is a ring around her head where there's no feathers and it looks like a crown and then she has feathers in a bowl shape on top haha it's kinda funny I should get a pic tomorrow

I would post in on craigslist or preferably if Redding has a facebook exchange page. we have a garden exchange page for Eldorado County. I go the route first. A fancy looking chicken like that should have no problem getting rehomed. Many times when I am selling olive egger chicks people end up wanting one of the rooster chicks after they see the parents

I will recycle the cartons but we don't buy or discount. Unless they are clean and in good shape I give them to someone else you makes firestarter cubes out of them. I wouldn't buy eggs packed in a messy carton but I sure get alot of them given to me, Easter tie dyed ones are common also.
