You can sometimes tell sex by breast down color at hatch. Boys have white chests girls have grey/ tan chests. But, this is not 100% All the time. You can get chicks that have narrow strips of white that are hard to sex by color. My pures are easier to sex, but my blues are still not as accurate in chest color. Breast down color is kind of like sexing by V markings and eyeliner in welsummers or head spots in barred/ cuckoo breeds. Some of us think that by selecting chicks that are clearly marked for breeders will help improve accuracy.

Right on :) thank you Trisha. Can't wait to get mine cooking:)

Hi everybody,I know I don't post much and Im sorry, I just am not that much of a talkative or social person online. But today I have some news. A little while ago I had though a chicken got over the fence and left home because I was counting how man. I didn't just find her though I found 8 chicks under and around her and they are all happy and healthy. I took her out of her spot and put her in a crate in the shade and gave her some food and water. Im sure shes hungry after eating just once a day i for 3 weeks. I have a brooder set up with some chicks in it but theres room. I think im going to let mama take care of them though and see how that turns out.

What the heck, silly uploader keeps uploading a "negative" image of my image

Yay for broodies sneaking off returning! Cute chicklits!

Here is my black pullet from a blue mating. I have to look really close to tell the difference between her and my pure barnevelder hens. Her lacing is pretty darn crisp. It gets a little spotty across her back, but otherwise is perfect.

I don't know anything about the breed but sure like the body on that hen.

It is amazing--sometimes I can go away from the hatcher and come back to nothing. Then I stop to make brownies and then check and 5 have hatched without even seeing a pip.

21 so far.....

Congrats!

Chris - congrats on the broody and chicks!

Nikon - funny pics!

Quote: Thank you. She's got great type, wing carriage, tail angle, nice head, and her eggs are nice and dark, so she's staying put as a breeder. Her feathers are pretty tight, but not as tight as my pure barnevelder hens. She's close enough though that I have to look at leg bands to tell her apart from my pure barnie hens - my pure barnies have leg bands and she doesn't.
