Ok I think I have 2 blacks a splash and a white then :) but are they variations of CROAD langshans? Or just labgastans? Because I ordered the ones that lay the eggs with the plum bloom
Haha I meant, does the black, white And splash all lay the eggs with the plum bloom? And are these varieties all croad langshans? I've only seen black ones

hello all, i've been off-line much of the week but popping in here again -- the weed-whacker guy is here yesterday and today, and i can't tell which the chickens enjoy more, stalking bugs in the tall grass or pouncing on them in the cut grass!

and the last broody, Frances' sister Bella, is finally hatching her eggs -- she only ended up with six -- so far two birchen marans have hatched, sit waiting on the third plus three SFHs -- here's one baby peeking out:

the broodies have not had perfect success with their chicks, though -- all but one of Speedy's chicks were killed by someone in the flock before i got the enclosure arrangements sorted out, and i got word from my neighbors, who i gave Speedy & her last chick to, that the chick got gobbled by a fox & her kit last night. also several very small ones weakened and died, one of Daisy's chicks apparently got left behind on the floor of the run one night (all the others figured out how to follow her up the ramp) and got too cold and died, and most disturbingly, one of Eleanor's four-week-olds got pecked to death over a single day, in the morning she was fine and in the evening when i got home from work she was all bloody and barely alive, and was too badly injured for me to be able to help. all that plus some eggs that didn't hatch means i've ended up with fewer chicks than i'd first imagined -- which may be a good thing, in the long run -- but it has been a rougher first-time-hatching-chicks experience than i had bargained for. hopefully the girls and i will all get better at this!

happily, the remaining chicks are all looking great -- here is Daisy with her five cutenesses:

hope everyone has a lovely holiday weekend!
Beautiful pictures! Your chickens must be in heaven in that grass! Bella is gorgeous but she looks a little annoyed at her paparazzi shot... I'm sorry about the other babies; at least you have other groups of fluffy butts!

one of my silver ameraucana is acting lethargic somewhat. they have only been on paper towls I switched over to shavings this am. They have only been inside and there water dish has been the only thing outside. To be safe I added some corrid to there water. it is drinking fine. walking around but still somewhat puffy. wish me luck
Not sure what's wrong with that one but am keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I'm in Kelseyville, Lake County..About an hour north of Napa. :) For me, Northern California is anywhere north of Sacramento or Bay Area. :)
Welcome! This is a great thread full of caring supportive (an ehem, enabling) chicken folks!

They really are something. One of the pullets has been adopted by my middle daughter as a pet. Her Name is Angela and has a purple band on her leg.

My Bresse Roosters have not started to crow yet. They are getting big combs so I expect them to start soon
Our Chauvelin has a beautiful crow! It is the perfect rooster crow if there is such a thing. He is not a big bird like our Langshan roos but he has a deep manly crow! I still can't get over it that DH who is anti-rooster loves this rooster!

BYCer thorleif lives in South Wales and raises white Croad Langshans. If you get a chance, to to the Langshan Thread!!! Welcome to 2012! and check out the pics of his birds. He's the one who believes that our American Langshans are Croads. He says that he can't see any difference between the Croad Langshans in the UK and our Langshans.

It gets pretty hot here in Grass Valley (not as hot as Roseville) and I use misters for all my breeds when it gets over 85 degrees. They work great and the birds learn quick to stand near them to cool off. You might want to get some for your birds

lol Yeah, I am going to get the misters up as soon as the coop is done! Ha ha on me. I knew better than to hatch before the coop was done. I am going to get a fan too so if it is a hot day the fan will move the air around a bit.
Those are just Id bracelets. To answer the deep chicken question. Who am I?

Im IN San Jose, but I only have chicks and unsexed juvies the usual Marans and silkies and showgirls I have sexed quail sets!. I have a lot of Blue Orphingtons, however, and one lemon cuckoo. ( some of these suckers are sexable, but just the early boys) Walli's shipping in Plastic eggs gave me my BEST hatch from shipped eggs I have had yet. I'm trying to figure out where I could get a zillion of them. Plus I have a frizzled polish that's outside ready, she is QUITE the little stinker and wants more attention then she is getting.

My serama chicks died to the dust, I think:( they went down the same time as the quail. No more deaths since I fixed that however, so its a hard lesson learned but at least I figured it out.

I hope you ahve a wonderful time at the party, maybe we can have coffee or something. I am picking up a snazzy new rental car today so I'm not stuck at home all weekend.
Dang I would love a frizzle polish. I am going to have to make the long drive to San Jose when I am ready for the quail and a couple "other" chickens. :) So what do you think it was that did the chicks and quail in? The dust? What did you do again to stop it?

I have to say that is a very traumatic first experience you have had. I think it may turn me off of hatching. BUT, look at all you learned.... albeit the hard way.

Hi there and Welcome to the Nor Cal Thread and
welcome-byc.gif

What kind of chickens do you have? How many do you have now? How much room do you have to build pens? You may need to start building now because I can almost guarantee that you will have more if you hang around here for very long...

I am south east of Sacramento - but if somebody asks me where I live I say Northern California... I don't have a dividing line in my mind where North stops and South starts..
To me Disneyland is Southern California. lol I know not logical, but hey!

I would love to hear a "manly" crow......

A week ago, I had a full incubator with 30 shipped Langshan eggs and 4 eggs from my birds at the farm. None of the Langshan eggs developed and 3 out of my 4 eggs went into lockdown. 2 Bresse chicks hatched today but the Langshan egg pipped early this morning and has not done a thing since then. It had some liquid come out of the pip site so it may have died before zipping. I am giving it until tomorrow morning and then I'll break a little more of the shell. Anyway, I only have 2 chicks and I am looking for a few more to keep them company. I am doing a staggered hatch so there are more Bresse and Langshan eggs that will hopefully hatch in a couple more weeks. Does anyone have any brand new chicks that they are selling or any due to hatch in the next 2 or 3 days? I'm really not that picky about breed as long as they are large fowl.

Ali yes I think it was. A few more died the next 24 hr's but I think their lungs were damaged. No one after that and everyone looks fat and happy now.

Pet I have chicks in the hatcher but it looks like they are going to be late and the usual suspects. And jaerhorns but those are mine!!

Plank passes Friday night. She had enjoyed an extra month in the sun and seemed content until the last day or so.

I was going to send her in to davis but she would be quite old then and I'm thinking I should just bury her. No one else had masses so I don't know that I would learn anything useful from it.

Rip little plank, she who love to sunbath while completely rigid and freak me out.

When are they due to hatch??? I wouldn't be able to pick them up until Tues or later. DH has a long weekend and Monet is in Oregon with one of my adult daughters & family. We are trying to finish up the quail/brooder pen as well as re-work our aviary. I know that he would not be interested in taking a road trip with me to San Jose!
