The State Fair news crew filmed events. They had asked if they could interview me, I told them I was only the clerk and they should interview the judge. I was standing in the background doing my best to be a good clerk (out of the way and unobtrusive, only speak to the judge to set up their classes, etc). All of a sudden it dawned on me I was actually in the shot, LOL

Thank your for the great video!

Hello!
We are off to the fair today. My only day off ! Quick question what day is the orange ville small animal fair? The San Rafael wine and food affair is the 10th and I'm wondering if they conflict.

I might go to the fair today too! Probably not until later in the afternoon though... have errands to run first. We are hosting a kids summer camp for our friends next weekend, and have to buy food!

We have not gone yet either! Its not open till 12 and I got lazy.

While I was away last week one of my silkie roosters decided he should learn to crow. Sucker is almost 11 months old! I thought he was going to be a quiet one.

The funny think is he still sounds like a new Crower with that break in his reedy voice but he is a huge fluff ball. He looks so funny trying so hard and leaning in to it.

The lump seems to come and go. Della is a hatchery Delaware so I am sure she has some other...probably leghorn...mixed in. I forgot to add that she will sit in a nest box often for hours and produce nothing. I don't think she has laid an egg in the nest box since April and those were soft shelled.

Ron so sorry I neglected to thank you for your concern and support. I appreciate both so much.

I find it hilarious when they first learn to crow. Some of the early attempts sound like they are being strangled. Somebody on the Broody Hatch-a-long thread mentioned they sound like a kazoo - and some do! I have one older SIlkie boy (Jazz) who still sounds like a kazoo - I love his crow! I wish the others would keep their little fuzzy muted crows - but I know they won't

. One big Black AM split boy thinks he is supposed to be a long-crower - Rrr a rrr a rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, neck stretched out giving it all he has!

I liked that! Is that you lurking in the background at the end?? So in a chicken show do the kids in the breed classes handle their own birds? Do they stand by the pen while the judge does?

Just have a chicken moving party lol. I have 3 cat carriers. I am sure others can help.
is your coop movable? I am sure we can help you move it.
nice

Great idea. I have a truck, and a big dog crate.
Awwww thanks guys! That is such a sweet offer!

Hey I liked that video! I would like to see a couple more of a judge evaluating other breeds just so I can get the idea. Watching a video is WAY easier for me to understand.

I posted this in the emergencies and illnesses thread but was hoping some of you could help me out too. Thanks. She is generally a happy girl though thinking on it now she used to always be the first in the house if the door was open but she hasn't done that since she was sick. I think I will weigh her since weight loss is a sign too.

Hi I am bumping this post because I have not had a lot of success in my research. I wanted to also give more information and an update on Della.

I treated her for sour crop and she responded.

Since then she has not laid a single "normal" egg. She has laid maybe 4 or 5 super soft shelled either below the roosts or in the run.

When I feel between her legs I can feel something in there but nothing ever comes of it

One thing I did read is that internal layers have reverse peristalsis in their ova tract so that the eggs don't make it to the vent instead they travel the wrong way and are deposited in the abdomen. She has laid an enormous egg with a normal sized egg inside which I also understand is a result of reverse peristalsis. She is 15 mos old now and other than for the first month she was laying has never been "normal" in terms of her laying. Soft shelled, shellless, weird things like what is pictured above...those are her normal

If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate it. I guess what I want to know is how long she is likely to live with this condition. She doesn't appear to be sick in general and seems to be enjoying life so I don't want to euthanize her yet but what can I expect to have happen??
I wish I had some advice to offer. I would be just as perplexed and concerned as you are.....

So I guess my girls are about 14 weeks old this weekend and I have one very nice Wheaten Ameraucana that let's me pet her chest. I noticed that she is pretty darn skinny. She doesn't really look that skinny but her keel is pretty prominent when I pet her. They have free choice food all day and the treats I give them. They are on King Freedom starter/grower.

Do they stay pretty slim for a long time and then fill out a bit when they are older? I was never really able to pet my other chickens like I do her. They would sit on me but I didn't get to touch them much.

OH, and I have two Welsummers that are kind of jerky. One for sure keeps trying to be the boss and I keep backing her down but she wants to challenge me every time I come in the coop. What's up with that?

Although I love their egg color, I have never had very nice Wellies and these two seem to be continuing that trend.

They do stay skinny for Quite a while. They are not Hens until they are a year old. My 2.5 year old Australorps are quite plump.

Hatchery Wellsummers?
