California - Northern

Just curious what breeds everyone has? And do you heat your coops In the winter?
White Empordanesa
Crele Penedesenca
Black Penedesenca
Silver Ameraucana
and a few odds and ends ( Non Standard Ameraucana aka Easter Eggers and some U of A Blues ) Oh and one standard Blue Ameraucana Hen
Since we got our dog we haven't had fox or raccoon problems. But the fox stands outside our fence and calls. It's cute:) (well cute as long as it stays away from our chickens!)
You may want to get him out of there before he calls in The bigger Game
They do issue them for Danger to people and pets.

It would be easier to have a Bobcat trapped and relocated.
x2
I actauly don't think they issue permits to shoot them, at least in california. It may be on the books, but loook and see how many were issued in the last 5 years...
The law states you can kill about anything any Anything not endangered ,or bird of prey that is caught in the act of harming livestock.
If you kill a Bobcat you must apply for the permit the next day. Same with a Bear.

This is the info I got from CA. GOV Fish and Game commission when I looked into getting a permit to kill the hawk that had decided to not eat its normal diet and kill chickens and set me back a year.

If the animal is not in the act of killing and you see it around a lot or you have lost animals but not seen the act you have to apply first.

I am not saying you should or should not do it but that is what the law states.
Crazy backwards state though. You can shoot a bear , bobcat , dog but not a #@#!! Hawk. LOl

Now I love animals and am in no way saying people should shoot them. Just saying the facts

Looks like I'll have 8.26 acres in 30 days, as escrow opened today.

Given that the other purchase was a day-and-a-half into escrow when it got cancelled, I am not quite yet at the giddy stage.

There has been some drama with this "counter-offer and afterthought" process, as well. I can't quite decide if the seller is a jerk or an idiot. (My broker referred to him as the former appellation.)

The concrete bench he wants, by the waterfall, is, well, made of cast concrete. Have fun getting it up the hillside. It has two faint cracks on the bench portion; I would be surprised if the thing could be retrieved in one piece. The stone fish he wants is quite nice; the price tag is still adhering to it:: $39.95.

The kicker? They want the key-pad operated, electric, decorative wrought iron driveway gate. It's obviously custom made, 16 feet wide and probably weighs 350 pounds. I happened to be standing at the gate with a friend when I got that phone call. The friend does metal-work; he suggested I offer a grand for the gate. Nope, the wife wants it.

My friend rolled his eyes as he stage-whispered, "We can build you a better one, Linda - let it go."

After the telephone conversation was concluded, he added, "You'll be able to put any decoration, not just grapes, on a gate - we'll go to [a business in Sacramento] and you can see the catalog of all this stuff. Horses, dolphins, quail, ivy, Rottweilers, anything - you can have chickens."

Oh. Well. Cool. I wonder how the seller is gonna manage to remove and transport his gate.

I have requested I be notified the day the gate is removed, so I can get a danged chain to put across the driveway.

So, as long as the well flow report comes back with at least 5 gpm potable water, all the dickering is done.

great news!! will keep my fingers crossed!

on the good news (mostly) front here: Maggie the basque that was grabbed-then-dropped by the bobcat yesterday is still alive, although still seems to be in a daze -- i don't see any obvious wounds on her, and she's standing or walking very slowly, but mostly stays still. just keeping an eye on her & making sure she has what she needs to heal, if she can.

and a dozen isbar eggs arrived in the mail, only a day late (3-day priority instead of 2, apparently) but unharmed, all 12 are in perfect condition -- will let them rest for a day, then try loading them into the new Rcom! and now they are extra-needed, as i have no isbar pullets left, only Blue the boy and two isbar/marans crosses.

so fingers crossed for lots of things!!

it is so interesting to see the different replies people get from fish and game over this stuff! I may have gotten such.. vehement responses from them because we are in San Jose mebby?

I was told that bobcat would be removed or trapped in our area 95 minutes after hell froze over, and once hell had applied for the proper permits. They actually laughed when we asked about trapping, as if Id asked for a tax credit or something.

Clearly if you talk to other areas they find the idea less amusing and more feasible. The fact that you can call a trapper is awesome! around here they only issue permits one month a year, and never when they could have kits.

Government it, cant live with it, cant kill it...

Some are State rules and some are county rules. Yolo county used to employ a trapper. Woodland does not have squirrels. I suspect they had some type of program to get rid of them here and it Worked!

come down to novato this weekend and take some of these turkeys that are hatching! I thought they were duds, but NOOOOO

So does anyone favor sprouting for their hens instead of throwing seeds or fermenting. I sprout for the family and thought it would be thrifty to increase my sprout jars over the winter when the bales if alfalfa just get slimy I. The snow?
I sprout seeds for my flock and also give them fermented feed and occasionally fodder. I made some sprouting containers out of old Parmesan cheese bottles by drilling small holes all over them. I also purchased 2 special mason jar lids for sprouting and one Easysprout kit. The Easysprout kit is new but one week into using it and I plan on getting more of them. It works well and looks nicer than my Parmesan containers that are nestled inside other re-purposed plastic containers! I sprout a multi-seed mix that includes BOSS and wheat that I purchased in a 50 lb bag at the feed store. I soak the seeds with a dash of Oxine (soaking time depends on which seeds they are). Then they are drained, rinsed twice a day, and usually fed to the chickens on day 3. The fodder seems to work better for me in the fall, winter, and spring. The seeds have a tendency to get mold on them when it is really hot outside. We are energy frugal and only use the AC when we absolutely can't stand the heat.

Congratulations!!!! That's exciting news! We'll all keep our fingers crossed that it will go through without any hiccups!
