I am sorry to hear about everyone's predator problems. For anyone considering building a run I wanted to let you in on a little secret.

In the Stucco department of Home Depot they have stucco wire. It is identical to poultry wire but a fraction of the cost. There are two grades. Light and heavy duty. The rolls are 3' by 150'. The light is approx $49 and the heavy is approx $65 per roll. My runs are 6' tall so I can walk in them. I use rabbit cage clips to attached the two strands of wire together.

On a lighter note, I was sitting at my computer this morning and I heard a strange crowing noise out in the yard. I have one juvenile blue Langshan cockerel, 2 younger RIR cockerels, and several even younger Bresse boys. I looked out and my blue boy was sitting on top of a pen with one of my 2 yr old Speckled Sussex hens. I went out thinking that he might be an exception to what I've experienced with Langshan roos. I have yet to have one that crows before 20 weeks old. When I stepped outside, he jumped off the pen and I saw the SS hen crow! She did it 2 times while I watched but when I grabbed my phone to record it, she just looked around then jumped down. I could hear a rooster crowing somewhere in the neighborhood so maybe she was answering him or showing her dominance over my juvie blue. She has been chasing him around the yard! Crazy Skittles!

We got foxed again . He hit my silkie shed on the hill right at dusk. Pancake went for him when he tried by the chicks and I think he got her. We looked for her for about an hour. The dog went wild this time and chased him out of the coop I know pancake got away but I'm afraid she fell down the ravine. I'm hoping against hope she is hiding down there and she makes noise in the morning.

Her chicks are rejecting all the other mothers and huddled in a corner crying.... the roosters are cooung to them. If it was not so sad it would be precious.
I am sorry. That just sucks.

So the Stucco wire is actually hardware cloth? I always thought stucco wire was similar to chicken wire? Maybe it has changed since the last time I Stucco'd a house.......( like I have ever done that)

No stucco wire looks like chicken wire but is heavier duty. It's not the same or as sturdy as hardware cloth, which has smaller openings.

My DH likes to use stucco wire on coops, but I still worry about it being predator proof. I'd sure use it on a run but on a coop, I prefer hardware cloth. DH disagrees with me on that.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Pancake did not appear this morning so I think she is gone. Her chicks are sitting with ebony who was one of the original mothers. I have them locked in silkie shed they are ****** at me. One of the roosters tried to cower mario into a corner this morning so the others could make a run for it.

My nose tells me the skunk came by last night too. Anyone have recommendations for a really good trap? I think the one we have is only good for babies and possums.

Yay for chicks! Yay for birthdays! Yay for feeling better! Yay for nor cal thread!
So sorry about Pancake. Tractor Supply has the large size Have a Heart type traps for 25.00 before tax. It is for raccoons, and it came with a small trap for free. I only wanted the small as I had to trap a feral starving kitten that had bit me through the finger nail. Good news is I caught him, he made it through the ten day quarantine, is gaining weight and friendly. I'm sure I will use the large one in the future.

No the stucco wire is just like poultry wire, but it comes in huge rolls and is much cheaper than buying poultry wire two rows over. The light weight is perhaps a 1' hole and the heavy duty has a larger hole (1.5" ?) but a heavier gage. It it not good for coops cuz rats etc... can get in, but it works great for the runs. I use hardware cloth on the coops and have not, yet, found a cheap source.

its much much much stronger than any poultry wire. I use it under my coops and along the side of the grow up pens
