California - Northern

I like the name! I think it's great when people name their houses/property.

It took us at least six months to name our house. We bought the house as tenants-in-common as the start of a community. The name we finally settled on, "Alpine Butterfly Lodge", reflects that... the alpine butterfly knot is a knot that can be tied in the middle of a rope, and is often used to link mountaineers together so if one slips the others can catch them. Seemed fitting for an intentional community. Besides, who doesn't like butterflies?

Love it!

ETA - even caused me to go look how to make one.

sounds like a great house name! mine is simply the Silver House, since it is partly covered with galvanized metal siding...

one downside of having the chickens locked in their coops almost all the time is that i spend less time watching them -- and so hadn't noticed til late yesterday that Lucy, my CL, is not looking well -- she's gotten very thin and her comb is smaller and droopy, and her backside is a mess (and she's not a particularly fluffy chicken, so usefully she's very tidy). i remember her seeming a bit low a few weeks ago, & gave them a course of Corid just to be on the safe side, so it isn't that.

i've isolated her & will get her cleaned up after work today -- but am not sure what else to do for her? chicken symptoms are so generic, it seems like it could be almost anything...

How old is she? I noticed this with my old hatchery girls and a few passed and I am about 99% sure it was the heat. All my younger birds (not from hatchery) are all fine in the heat.

Maybe some vitamins/electrolytes? With some yogurt to help with the gut bacteria, since you gave Corid.

I gave 8 chickens a bath yesterday and have 4 more to do today. Anybody going to the Heirloom Expo on Tuesday afternoon? I have someone who wants a video of Walt's seminar.

The Morgan Territory fire by Mt Diablo is still growing. As of 7:15 this morning, it had burned 1500 acres and was only 10% contained. Morgan Territory Rd is completely closed and that is the road that the ranch is on. Megan messaged me last night to tell me that they couldn't get in at all and they are just praying that all of their chickens are okay.

Wow! Check out this video of the fire. 100 home evacuated so far and one person hurt but not life threatening. Prayers being said.

How terrifying! Are all her chickens there? My thoughts are with her.

I'm not familiar with that area. Is it densely populated?

she's a little over a year old, and not from a hatchery -- but we've not had the crazy heat that folks inland are dealing with, the highest we've had is 90° or so.

i gave her some yogurt this morning, which she was gobbling down when i left -- will add vitamins to the mix when i get home this afternoon. she'll definitely need a major cleaning, and i've never given a grown chicken a bath before -- any tips?

and such scary news about the Morgan fire -- fingers crossed that Megan's flock is out of its way!

Ditto! Wow, I'll be thinking of them. I'm not familiar with the area either - is it densely populated?
