for Chiquita and tommysgirl

X2 ... I'm so sorry that both of you have had to go through this, knowing how much your chickens mean to you. Chiquita, you need HOTwire.

How was the Heirloom festival today Santa Rosa Today?

Notice I have the correct name this year. I do not know why I want to call it an Heritage Festival....

I notice lots of people are calling it different things. I enjoyed it. It was nice to see Debi - who I did recognize

- and I am so grateful to Daphne, who helped me haul 12 squawking, flapping, not cage trained chickens from the truck to the cages and back again. I'm even more in awe of Deb now, since she shows so many birds at once.

I know someone who has a cougar dog. As soon as the dog gets the scent it turns and runs straight to the house. At least they know when one has or is around.

I agree.

I had to cover one of my runs due to hawks picking off my juvenile birds. The fencing was already 6 ft non climb. I got the netting off of Ebay.

This looks great..have been telling DH we need some netting, can I ask how much it was on ebay...and what size is it? Thanks!

How do you guys feed your chickens? I feed mine layer crumble fermented and feed in the morning and afternoon/evening. I just don't know how much to give them. Should they eat it all at once? Or should I leave some in their pans all day? I just don't know if I'm over feeding them or not giving them enough. They seem to rush the fence no matter if they still have food or not

The second pigeon egg was laid this morning. Really interested to see if they hatch and what color(s) we get. It seems strange that 2 white based birds can produce a red baby or a black one. These birds are really affecting the learning curve. It's a good thing they are sweet.

I am one of those folks who leaves feed available all day. I top off the feeders in the morning and in the afternoon (unless the last bit from the last bag on hand is emptied because I got lazy about feed runs - then I make a feed run the next day).

I do not use layer feed because there are so many different breeds and birds of different ages in my flock. Crushed oyster shell is also out all the time, free choice, in a separate dish.

I feed similar to greyes, but I have coops that are just layers and they do get layer pellets. I toss them a grain mix as a treat in the am, and any veggies I don't use for canning or fresh sales. They come running hoping I have a treat. Breeding pen and chicks get game feed (21% protein). The feeders always have feed in them, they hold 2 days worth so if I'm late getting out they still have food.

I'm so sorry to hear about Curly. He had a good life while he was with you.

Thanks. My daughter said something to the effect of "well, his life was way better than it would have been if you had lopped off his head with pruning shears." That was comforting..sorta

So sorry about Curly.

The first one I saved that way, Penelope taught me the "no special needs chickens" mantra. You really bond closely with the bird when you have to help them with every need. It makes it tough to lose them. And I have so many birds now, I just have to subscribe to survival of the fittest.

Yep Deb, that's what Curly taught me too. If I had let nature take its course he would have died in his shell so that was a lesson too. I don't think I will help unless they zip but that's is what I say now. Thanks to all of you for understanding.

We need the netting to keep the peacocks out of the chicken feeders. I swear they are getting the majority of it. Ray used to keep them away but Ozzie is useless in that dept he shares space no problem.

The hatchery NH roo that I am getting from my uncle gives me rocks and little bits of chicken feed when I go down to his pen. I haven't gone inside the pen but I do feed him and talk to him and that is where he is getting his ardor. Should I just carry him around a lot when he comes to live with me? Should the presence of girls of his own species change this.

Harriet's ( and everyone else's) eggs are fertile and Beakface is trying to go broody again. She just started laying again about 3 weeks ago she is DETERMINED so if she is still at it on Thursday I will give her some of Harriet's eggs to hatch plus a couple of Buckbeak's. I want to know what a Del over an AL will look like. Anyone feel like posting that genetic calculator again??

DH is going to finish the handicoop and we are going to use it as a breeding/grow out pen also explained chicken math again...I lost a Dorking in the heat and am waiting to get more so 1 will become two because she will need a friend...

Ron I think you call it Heritage instead of Heirloom because you grow more chickens than tomatoes.

Turkey's are like dogs but we have a story about my niece being surrounded by my Burbon Reds and Neragansetts when she was little and wearing sparkly jewelry. They were doing what turkeys would do in such a situation and she was shreiking "No more big chicken biiites No More big chicken biiites."
