I'm so sorry to hear about Curly. He had a good life while he was with you.
Thanks. My daughter said something to the effect of "well, his life was way better than it would have been if you had lopped off his head with pruning shears." That was comforting..sorta
So sorry about Curly.
The first one I saved that way, Penelope taught me the "no special needs chickens" mantra. You really bond closely with the bird when you have to help them with every need. It makes it tough to lose them. And I have so many birds now, I just have to subscribe to survival of the fittest.
X2 ... I'm so sorry that both of you have had to go through this, knowing how much your chickens mean to you.
Yep Deb, that's what Curly taught me too. If I had let nature take its course he would have died in his shell so that was a lesson too. I don't think I will help unless they zip but that's is what I say now. Thanks to all of you for understanding.
We need the netting to keep the peacocks out of the chicken feeders. I swear they are getting the majority of it. Ray used to keep them away but Ozzie is useless in that dept he shares space no problem.
The hatchery NH roo that I am getting from my uncle gives me rocks and little bits of chicken feed when I go down to his pen. I haven't gone inside the pen but I do feed him and talk to him and that is where he is getting his ardor. Should I just carry him around a lot when he comes to live with me? Should the presence of girls of his own species change this.
Harriet's ( and everyone else's) eggs are fertile and Beakface is trying to go broody again. She just started laying again about 3 weeks ago she is DETERMINED so if she is still at it on Thursday I will give her some of Harriet's eggs to hatch plus a couple of Buckbeak's. I want to know what a Del over an AL will look like. Anyone feel like posting that genetic calculator again??
DH is going to finish the handicoop and we are going to use it as a breeding/grow out pen also explained chicken math again...I lost a Dorking in the heat and am waiting to get more so 1 will become two because she will need a friend...
Ron I think you call it Heritage instead of Heirloom because you grow more chickens than tomatoes.
Turkey's are like dogs but we have a story about my niece being surrounded by my Burbon Reds and Neragansetts when she was little and wearing sparkly jewelry. They were doing what turkeys would do in such a situation and she was shreiking "No more big chicken biiites No More big chicken biiites."
