Can you ship live adult chickens? Is it insanely pricey?

yes, You can ship live birds and yes it is expensive. For example: A 16" x 16" x 16" 12 pound box will cost $62.68 to ship to Florida from California if you print your labels at home and $91.10 if you have go to the window at the PO. Yes, you will save $28 if your print and pay for your shipping labels at home using USPS.com

Here is the postage calculator:

The shipping box I use weight 4.8 pounds so I can only ship 7.5 lbs of birds in that 12 lb box.

You have to use a US approved poultry box which will run you about $20. The boxes are only around $12 but it is expensive to get the boxes shipped to you. I buy in bulk to take advantage of free shipping so I don't know the cost of buying 1 box and having it shipped but I remember it was outrageous. .

So in this example: 7.5 pounds of birds (1-4 depending on size/age) will cost you $82.68 to ship from California to Florida (shipping and cost of box). Within California or West Coast charges will likely be around $15 cheaper.

:ya Yes! Just found out my girlfriends hives located on the upper deck of her home (so funny to drive by and see the swarm up there) here in South lake were a sucess. They had to move them from their property in placerville because of "break-ins" she has a closet full from the last harvest and they are almost ready to do another! :drool  Bread and raw honey here I come.
that's so awesome! My grandfather and cousin had hives and I wanted one too. DH says he's "deathly allergic". But he got stung last year and just swelled a bit. Still it's a no for us but would love to start one.

I've lost 42 lb and my DH has lost 50 lb.  We both feel great eating this way.  All of the health benefits we have been enjoying has made it easy to give up those bad for us foods.  We are at the point where we do cheat a little here and there.  I enjoyed a delicious piece of pink pearl apple pie at the Heirloom Expo this week.  It tasted so good but I could tell that my body did not like the sugar and gluten. I have 17 more lb to lose but this is a lifestyle change for us.  We are in it for the long haul and plan on continuing to eat this way even after we have reached our goal weights.
that is awesome! It's hard to give up sugar and gluten free seems to be pretty good as far as taste. Is that all you changed?

Hi Cryssyr!

How are the chickens?

I haven't. One of the guys on the RIR thread just purchased them. He posted pictures of them after he got them and they looked fine. He said they were fine and he was an experienced shipper. It was the first time he had bought from them too.
That is great. The shipping looks reasonable also. The shipping on the horizon boxes make them cost prohibitive unless you are buying in bulk.. I ended up buying 25 to take advantage of the free shipping otherwise the shipping was more than the boxes. Thanks for sharing this link. I will try them when my supply runs out.

Hi Ron,
All is good over here. My blue copper marans just started laying so I'm happy to get those beautiful eggs. But getting on this site keeps making me want to add more breeds to my flock :) ( except for that one that only lays 60 eggs a year and costs an arm and a leg) . How are yours doing? The pullet you just had starting to lay : what breed was that? The pic of her was gorgeous but can't remember the breed?
