that's so awesome! My grandfather and cousin had hives and I wanted one too. DH says he's "deathly allergic". But he got stung last year and just swelled a bit. Still it's a no for us but would love to start one.
that is awesome! It's hard to give up sugar and gluten free seems to be pretty good as far as taste. Is that all you changed?

We started off with no soy, corn, peanuts, dairy, gluten, eggs, and sugar for 21 days. It was way easier than it sounds. You eat vegies, fruit, meat (organic, grass-fed if possible), and healthy fats with a small amount of approved non-gluten grains like quinoa, brown rice, oatmeal, etc. Then after the 21 days, you add some of the restricted foods back in one at a time to see if your body is intolerant of any of them. Soy, corn, peanuts, and sugar remain on the restricted list. Organic, non-GMO fermented soy, corn, and sugar should comprise less than 5% of your diet. You never go back to processed foods and instead concentrate on eating real foods. It is very similar to a Paleo diet. I found out that I am very intolerant of dairy and of course that's what I crave. I have chosen to only eat gluten, corn, and sugar on very rare occasions. I have added eggs back into my diet and see no negative effect so I am assuming that I am not intolerant of eggs. That was a relief!

Thank you deb :) I wonder how they taste. Would thy be tastier than a marans ,for example?

Aw heckkkkk no! Silkies aremy least favorite bird to eat meat wise the skin is back. The neat is black the testes are black ( in a silkie cross roo he has one black one, freaky!) The bones are darker but not midnight.

I stew all my silkies. There are a fair few black to the bone breeds in the Orient. There is argument if silkies were the first or just a specialized offshoot.

If anyone has ever wondered how many times a skunk can spray before it runs out it is more then 3 and less then 6. On a related note some pro tips for trapping skunks do NOT put the cage right next to the door of your coop!
Also, vinegar washes work well on human hair.....

In other other related news: our new trap is working !

I like this thread too because it's nice to see everyone is so close in the area. These days you don't usually have to go too far to see great birds and nice people :)
I think that this thread has fantastic variety of really nice birds available to see and to purchase...maybe the best state/region thread on BYC. And yes we do have Deb and Deann and PapaBrooder so that gives us an edge but the rest of us have interesting and varied taste (no pun inteded) in poultry so we pretty much have access to whatever.

Speaking of getting what you want...Ron, I covet a blue Australorp. If you hatch more in the spring I would love to buy a pullet from you. Of course you wouldn't sell a singleton so naturally I would bring home two

Do you guys keep bantams with LF? I never had any interest in Bantams until I was considering who to pal Curly with then I got the bug and now I want a couple of Nankins and Frizzled Cochins and Mottled D'Uccles.. Don't really want to tie up a whole coop run with them so wondering if they could hang with the big kids.

great and just so I am clear on the math...a bantam is 1/3 of a LF is that right...or do they not count at all??;)
They only count for half or a third depending upon breed (Sebrights and Seramas are "thirds" but larger bantam breeds are "halves") when they start to lay because chicks don't count at all, regardless of breed or size. :p

So my speckled sussex who is 20 weeks old and unlikey to lay for a month+ and all my other non laying pullets are still chicks??? That is the best news! I can tell my husband we only have like 8.chickens. He will be thrilled.

speaking of my younger girls..they just don't like me as much as I wish they did. gonna head out there with a mealworm pancake and see if I can bribe them into being my friends.

Yes, we would leave them for 3-4 weeks. depending on how long it takes for her to wean them. Unless she is a hen that is VERY low in the pecking order and the others pick on her and thus her chicks, it should be ok, silkies stay fairly small. I'd just bring over some food and corid when I bring them so you don't have to deal wiht baby stuff. You and she can enjoy the babies but not have to wonder what to do with them when they are weaned.

I'll have to check google calendar to see when the next batch is due. I have the best luck if they have been sitting for 10 days or more.

I sent you a PM, chiqita.

Now I'm off for a short Tour De Coop!
