Hi Ron,
All is good over here. My blue copper marans just started laying so I'm happy to get those beautiful eggs. But getting on this site keeps making me want to add more breeds to my flock

( except for that one that only lays 60 eggs a year and costs an arm and a leg) . How are yours doing? The pullet you just had starting to lay : what breed was that? The pic of her was gorgeous but can't remember the breed?
She is a Blue Australorp.

Fickle girl--she has not laid one since. I did move them to a new pen so they may be adjusting.

For Black boned, Black Meat and black feathered chickens, This is the Breed that Deb recommended: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/806031/the-svart-hona-swedish-black-hen-thread

It is a very slow thread though. Hopefully we can perk it up a bit!

Quote: I just followed the link. It will be interesting to see the price when they are released. Very pretty birds. Sounds like they will be releasing their first birds via auction, Rarebreedaction most likely.

Your Blue australorp is gorgeous! I just got the Blue Copper Marans and Lavender Ameraucanas this year. Love the different colors. So many beautiful ones around. I'm not thrilled with my lavender ameraucana roo. I'm told I need a nice Black roo to improve. The pullets are lovely though.
Pullets can be fickle- I go out every day waiting for them all to start and lay regularly.
The black swedish hens are very beautiful birds! I've never seen anything like them. Black meat would be interesting to see.
I like this thread too because it's nice to see everyone is so close in the area. These days you don't usually have to go too far to see great birds and nice people :)

I have a couple of excess silkie boys I may try processing. Although I don't expect to find them nearly this black inside. I've seen even more graphic photos (just type black chicken meat into a search engine), but I didn't want to post them here for fear of offending someone.

My husbands family are Vietnamese and all but his mother and sister are in Thailand. His mom told me the ayam cemani are all over the villages over there. They just run wild, must be great foragers. I said well next time you go, get me some eggs! Haha

Deb I don't know silkies had black meat? Aren't they rather small though?

Thank you deb :) I wonder how they taste. Would thy be tastier than a marans ,for example?

They also had an episode of chopped with an ayam cemani. I think the birds are just beautiful intact and butchered.

I can't imagine they would have used a cemani on chopped, due to their rarity here. I did see an episode of Chopped where they used silkies though.

Yes, (correct) silkies have black skin and meat. Silkies are considered medicinal in the orient and prized for their meat. I always figure you can eat anything, look at the size of a Cornish game hen or a pigeon or quail.

They are supposed to taste just like chicken (of course) after you get past the look of the meat. They are said to be slightly gamier, a bit more like quail. But once again, that could be a mental thing. Somehow I think I would have to eat a black meat chicken in soup.

But I don't deal well with bizarre foods. I always said if I were married to Andrew Zimmern, I wouldn't be able to kiss him knowing some of the things that had been on his tongue. I saw an episode of his yesterday and his wife was on the show. She wasn't quite as adventurous as he was,

If you are breeding black to lavender at this stage get a black split so it has the lav gene. Otherwise you just get splits.

I don't know why you would do that instead of nice lavender . I don't quite understand the genetics of breed to black, but it is very popular.
