California - Northern

You are funny! I'm in the Central Valley. Hmm, maybe that qualifies as the Mason Dixon Line of CA! Technically we are about 2 hrs north of the absolute middle. You know where the Redwood Tree and Palm Tree are on Hywy 99?

Regarding chickens, we have have several rare breeds. I'm looking for more Dark Brahma's. I only have one pullet and a very randy rooster. I'd like to take the pressure off of her. Right now they are separated but eventually I want to breed them. They are very hard to find. Do you happen to know of any in your area?
There is a guy in Pinole which is East SF Bay with Dark Brahmas. Not so close to you but it's a start. I will look and see if I can find you some more helpful information

I am sending you a PM with his contact info taken from the Brahma club membership list.

I keep them in the cup until the yolk is absorbed then take them out of the cup.

Bresse are tough little guys so they will likely be fine.
The yolks are absorbed.

A cup is also good to strengthen and straighten out their legs, so I would leave them in for awhile longer, just take them out once their umbilical cord is off and give them some water and food. I never liked them dragging their umbilical off as it can get caught and pull stuff back out - not good... Usually the chick has twisted it off in the egg before they get their legs co-ordinated and kick their way out. You are just using the cup like an egg to help them. Once they can stand up in the cup then I would take them out.

About the hen's action - I think I forgot what type she is. I have a Sumatra that will kill any chick that isn't black - and I do mean anything. I had her and my Blue Silkie on Phoenix eggs, she killed every chick that hatched. I took the Silkie away with the rest of the eggs - the Silkie hatched out three more and they are fine. Some birds do not like the "wrong" colors, some birds don't care. My Blue Silkie will hatch anything, the Partridge Silkie only wants Partridge, the other Blue Silkie does not like Extended Black (Penguin) but is fine with all the other colors.

Does she have any chicks under her right now - and what color does she have?
I am a bit worried about the squished chicks toes . My neighbor is coming over shortly and I am going to have her help me so I can tape her toes.
The cord fell off the Bresse, but not the squished chicks. I will spray some vetricin on it when I tape its toes.

The hen is a Partridge Wyandotte. I took all eggs and chicks away from her after she kicked out the first 2 that had hatched (one being bresse and one being marans not fully out of the shell).

Thanks for the update do the cats have access to the room where the squished shell baby is?
kikwi Welcome.
I kicked them out during the day (the cats), but they are in at night. It's a small house, and the chicks are on the dining table right now.

We used to have a woman in Florence OR with show line Dark Brahmas, but someone brought MG to her place. She has culled the birds she knew were affected and is hoping for clear results on her next hatch. I can see where her eggs came from if you're interested.

Hmm... I haven't heard of PW breed having color exceptions, but every hen is different. You can test her with the fully fluffed out and running around chicks if you want her to brood them - just put one in front of her and see what she does. If she pecks it once and tucks it under her then she accepted it. If she warns it (growl) and fluffs up against it and throws it or attacks it - then she is prejudiced against that color. That's how I knew which ones mine didn't like - they warned it off and attacked it...

The toes on the squished chick are curled? If the umbilical hasn't come off it yet it might not be ready to stand up... sometimes they will keep their feet curled up until they are ready. Sometimes just leaving it in the cup (with a piece of paper towel or something for traction) will make it put its feet flat when its ready to stand up. Let us know how it goes with Squishy.

Hi everyone! Just found this thread. I grew up in Sactown, now in Oakland. Got my first chicks in June, and I'm hooked. They're a flock of 5 birds: welsummer, orpington, basque, swedish flower, and cream legbar, all from juststruttin.

Here they are at about 12-13 weeks. So far, it looks like I have all girls!

And here they are in their run, which encloses this crazy sideways acacia tree they like to walk on. This tree is awesome -- it drops seeds they like to eat and seed pods which become more litter!

Can't wait for that first egg... Anyhow, hi everyone!

Wow, it is so good to see the girls. They look great and yes they all look like girls You should go play the lotto if 5 for 5 are girls. Can't beat those odds. Love the run. They are indeed lucky chickens. Welcome to the thread.

I bet your little one in the cup will be able to join the ones in the bator by this evening. I made a lame but effective lid for my brooder by just folding a piece of hardware cloth over the top like it was foil. I used big binder clips to secure it but you cold also use bungee cords or something like that.

Congrats on the hatch...too bad mama was a better setter than mom.

Speaking of broodies I am a little worried about my hatching eggs with the gov. shut down. Hope the USPS is isn't short handed or anything that will delay them. They are supposed to be here Thurs. Friday at the latest,

Here is the parent flock:

USPS is separate from other Gov Agencies. They are closed at all.

I hope you get your eggs soon!
