Ditto! I am sorry about cupcake.

I really do not like skunk smell. I smelled it in the wind a couple of weeks ago. Luckily they have never made it into town.

I am sorry about the poor hatch. It may be time to turn everything off and sterilize--let it all air out for at least a couple of weeks. I know that is hard with all of the orders you must have to fill....

Did that about 5 weeks ago. We were going to also replace the stuff on the door ( can not think of the name right now) that seals it as its old. But didn't get to it since I had to put it on unexpectedly. Not that I won't do it again. Sigh.

Chicjengirl just remember there are a lot of things it can be that are not a huge deal. It is just good to know!

I am sorry to hear about the poor hatch too - its really annoying when you don't know what went wrong. When I re-vamped my cabinet I used the foam sticky backed stuff they use to seal drafts on the doors - available at any hardware store. There are lots of thicknesses and widths, just try and get about the same size as what was already there.

Also sorry to hear about all the sick birds and Cupcake. I would want to know why, and make sure it can't spread in the others in the flock...

Just was sorting through my inbox. saw an email with the title "New Breakthroughs for Children with Autism." Which I read as "New Breakthrough for Chicken with Autism." I actually thought it said that for at least long enough to think "...and people think I am a loon."

What is wrong with me???

That happens to you too?

Yesterday was a sucky day up here.
I found the baby pigeon dead in the morning, looked like they just squished it. Cupcake died late last night, she went to sleep in my lap and then she was gone. The skunk was outside the dog run last night and sprayed the garden cart when the dogs charged towards it when I let them out. The stink just kept invading the house all night.
So sorry. And ugh on the skunk.

This is officially the worst hatch I have ever had. I checked a few eggs that did not pass the float test and many died second week. I checked the temp records and no spikes . i have no idea what happened. Both my eggs and the shipped eggs did not do well. Not looking forward to writing this email....
What a bummer.

What is MG?
Sorry for your cruddy hatch

Mycoplasma gallisepticum. It is a respiratory disease in poultry. Birds may recover from it, but will be carriers for life - infecting other birds. It can transmit vertically (through the egg to offspring). Treatment is usually close your flock - no birds or eggs going to other people, as they will infect their flocks or cull all birds and start over.

Here's more on it:

Yes, I do not want to scare you with the worst case scenario. Chances are very good that the problem is not one of the really bad ones.

Testing is for peace of mind. It is a relief to get a report of something that is not too hard to treat.

Quote: Agreed.

I was concerned about a cockerel that looked like his jaw was rotting out. Someone in the emergencies section mentioned that it could be canker. I researched and it looked EXACTLY like canker. I would have swore it was canker.

Canker is a disease passed on from pigeons, and other birds that eat pigeons, use the same drinking source, etc. So it can transmit from pigeons to hawks, and I did have a hawk attack that left a partially consumed body in the run. I confirmed with a phone call to UC Davis, that if my flock ate from a contaminated body, it could transmit to my birds that way - from the hawks saliva left on the carcass.

So, I made the tough choice and took him in for euthanasia and necropsy. It turned out that he had an infection from imbedded plant material that was causing his jaw to be necrotic. He would not have survived anyway as the damage to his jaw was pretty bad, but it gave me peace of mind knowing I did everything I could to protect my flock. And I learned a whole lot about yet another poultry disease.

This prompted me to cover that run as well. I lost 3 juveniles to hawks that time.

I just called Oregon State University to find out about necropsy fees. Up here they are charging $35, disposal fee $5, report fee $13, plus the shipping fees. If I wanted them to do anything other than a visual, tissue cultures etc., they are all extra fees.
