I really love silkies but... I feel bad for them.... I feel like they can't really see lol. I had a friend with silkies in their layer flock and the silkies were always gotten by the predators.

X2 I feel bad for crested birds lol

Got my egg tonight when I got home from work. My daughter found it on the ground. I am pretty sure they aren't digging the bucket nest boxes. I guess I need to find a replacement.

They were so much louder than usual I had a feeling. My daughter came running back to me saying, " THERE IS an EGG! THERE is an EGG!"

Kids make life worth living I am tellin' ya!

If I wasn't on my phone I would post a picture, because I am sure none of you have seen an egg before.

It looks like an Orp egg because my other option is a Welsummer egg and it isn't that....

The waiting is over. I can now move on.

Yay!!!!! Post a pic...we egg geeks get a kick out of first egg pics and first __________ (insert color or other adjective here) egg, and first ptp and first zip and first chick out... Feed our obsession please.

I think my first egg may be coming from my two year old Orpington's I got!! One of the hens has been in the nest box all day and this evening.

Picked up two EE girls to be buds for The General's former roommate. Both are quite cool looking. My original EEs are long and rangy. They remind me of road runners These two girls came from a different source and their conformation is shorter and broader. Poor little things are in isolation right now and a little confused about what has been going on. But they will be happy when life is sorted out and they move into their big new digs with pasture.

The General is shaping up to be a gentleman he obsesses over scratching up treats in the run and he dances when he isn't scratching. He has forgotten his earlier crush on me and now does these things for his ladies and ignores me.

I love the sweet rooster noises both my guys make

My hatch day is just a week away!!!

I have 3 lavender orps, 2 bc marans, & a cream brabanter. They were all hatched late April/early may. I haven't gotten any eggs yet. Are these breeds slow to mature or?

Muy uncle finally got a couple of friends for his silkie roo. He picked up two D'Uccle pullets. So their eggs will hatch smooth but their daghter's will hatch silky if bred back to dad? I was kind of thinking about what their crosses would be like

That sounds like a cool cross too. What color are the d'Uccles?

Yes, there is a chance of silkied feathers when crossed back to Dad - as long as the girls give the kid the silkied feather gene and not the regular feathered one. 50% chance - per chick.

You can help out on the theory too - just check the leg color on the boys vs the leg color on the girls. In his case the girls "should" have black legs and the boys "should" have light legs...

Kelly, Let's talk about Wellies after yours hatch! I think that the girls that I have aren't the best quality but they are what I have to start with. I'll try to get some pics of them to show you.

Yes! Very supportive.

There is a guy here on campus that must have the same thing. He is covered pretty much from head to toe.

I hope you can figure out what is making your skin\immune system react this way.

In general the bigger bodied they are the longer it takes. But take heart. I have 5 late April girls 2 small bodied 3 large that have not yet started laying either

. Last year 5 of my early May girls waited until the first week in Dec.

Marans take 25 weeks or so but with lower hours of light at this time of the year it will take a bit longer.

The average for all breeds is 22 weeks. Leghorns and the Brown hybrids start from 16 to 20 weeks old and are the earliest. Wellsummers seem to be one of the latest.
