The eggs do make a big difference in baking.

Thanks to all your input I picked up a Dzn Trader Joe eggs. Tomorrow I'll borrow an incubator from our 4H leader then we're off to the races!

Okay, this is probably overkill..........but just to be sure...............you did pick up the ones marked "Fertile", right? They do sell regular eggs and cage-free eggs also.

Ron...I love all the green in your egg basket;)
WendyJeepChick,

Saw in another post you are from Modesto area? We are too! We are getting a flock of Mille Fleur Leghorns and a friend of ours nearby has Brown Leghorns. You are set on the white?

fourth chick (a second splash isbar) hatched at 3:30am, woke me up with a commotion of peeping and kicking. none of the other eggs show any sign of action -- so, out of 18 shipped eggs, 4 hatched (two marans, two isbars) -- not a great ratio, but the chicks are a sweet little bunch.

Deb, thanks for checking;) I did get the box labeled Fertile. The date on them is Nov 20. I take it that means they were laid on 10/20. That makes them kind of old but the others had a date of Nov 15.

CackleJoy. I'm not set on white Leghorns, just Leghorns who lay white eggs? Where are you getting your leghorns from? I didn't want to pay the tremendous shipping fee for the small number of hatcheries who still have leghorn chicks available.

I do not feed medicated chick starter any longer. I give the day old chicks a chunk of grass/dirt/sod from an area my chickens roam. The chicks peck at the grass - run over the dirt and get exposed to the cocci immediately - while they still have the immunities from the egg. I had no cases of cocci in my chicks this year, and I did not have to medicate at all. I do feed fermented feed, I use Purena Flock Raiser and add vinegar and ferment it in a small plastic bowl set on the counter in the kitchen to keep it warm and fermenting. IF I see any symptoms of cocci I will treat with the standard 10 days - but I didn't see any symptoms.

I never use medicated feed. I started taking them out to the grass every couple of days and have not treated for Cocci since the Bresse hatch.

If they show symptoms they get corid 20% powder at 1.5 tsp for 5 days and then 1/2 tsp for another 5 days. Vitamins follow treatment.

Ptia Pinta, Basque and Australorps were never treated. I do not think I treated the HRIRs from Fogel and I did not treat the Penedesencas from Our Fly Babies along with the Horstman hatch.

They seem to do better if I feed them King Feed Freedom Starter and only treat if they need it.
Thank you, Dian and Ron! I guess I am too late for the lump of dirt or am I? The babies are 2 weeks old now. Hmmmm....have to think about that.

here are the first three hatchlings -- a fourth is still trying to chip its way out of the egg:

the splash on the left is the isbar, then an either dark blue or black marans, & on the right is the duckwing marans -- still fluffing out a bit!

and the duckwing underneath the ecoglow -- with little light feathers on its feet!
Congrats on the babies! Splash Isbars are the prettiest splash birds around - here's mine. She was hiding in the coop, so it doesn't show her beauty as much, but she is striking. I haven't had any health issues with her.

Those of you who do not feed your newly hatched chicks medicated starter feed, do you put amprolium/corid in their water to help build up their immunity to cocci? At what age do you do add it and at what dosage? I have always used medicated feed for the first 4 or 5 weeks but with the latest hatch, I decided to only feed them King Freedom Starter. I have had some chicks from other hatches have problems with cocci once they were moved to the outside pens and I would like to avoid this if at all possible.
I feed medicated on and off. I usually buy a bag in the spring for the hatching for the season. I'm out now, so my latest hatch is eating flockraiser. I've alternated between flockraiser or chick starter for years and have not noticed any difference in the chicks from doing this. I have not had any issues with cocci here. (knock on wood)

Don't mind me I'm just subscribing =)
Welcome!
