That thread does NOT help you stop ... and you have a good reason to "fall off the wagon"
I bet if you mentioned you were looking for LF Frizzles (Cochin maybe) somebody would "enable" you a bit...
That meat cross sounds neat - I had to go look up the father bird - Pretty!
Thanks, ChickNmamma.... I was awful. And to make things worse, the skunk didn't even eat them. It just killed them and dragged them under our shed. I could see the bodies but could not get to them. I had to be reminded for the next 4 -6 weeks because the smell was awful. I now have heavier 1" square welded wire all the way around where it got in and haven't had any problems since.
As for the feed store, the guy who sold them to me did not seem very experienced with chicks and didn't seem very sure which ones were which. I should have waited until the owner was there, but the ones I ended up with have been good hens so no big loss.. I did learn a lesson though!
Yes, the really sad part is all the skunk wants is the brains - which they remove through the birds ears the same way they eat the eggs. The birds don't make any fuss at all so the darn skunk can go from one bird to the next. Sickening - and a waste. If they ate one chicken they would be full - but we lost all but one of our young birds the same way (I think it was 14 birds?). Not under the coop, but on the floor of the coop... just awful! Which is why I put up roosts high enough that only an acrobat can get to them (or a flying bird) and why I am so worried about some of the just moved birds who insist on sleeping outside on the ground in the run instead of in the coop with the older birds. I am glad you solved your problem by blocking it so it can't get in.
