California - Northern

@tommysgirl Quote is not working ... way back, you asked about my experience with Sand Hill. I've ordered from them twice. Both times, I placed the order in Spring and received chicks a few months later, in mid Summer.
First order was for Buckeyes and SG Dorkings. They didn't have the number of Buckeyes that I had ordered, so they substituted multiple colors of Dorkings - gave me several extras. I thought that was a nice gesture, they meant well. I would not recommend ordering Dorkings from them, because that line goofed up the color in my SGs so much, I am still trying to get rid of off colors. The type on the Dorkings was not good, but those were the most broody of any Dorkings I've ever had. Health of all their birds was also good. Type on the Buckeyes was a little better but still not to Standard.
They also gave me a credit, since they weren't able to fulfill my order exactly. Again, I thought that was very nice of them. Just for fun, I used the credit to order Delawares, because their description made them sound like good meat birds.
Those Dels grew fast and laid large dark brown eggs every day for their first year. They had decent size - still not to Standard and not as large framed as Kathy's - but still good. Their color was not right at all, the roosters were too upright. I liked them so much that I decided to stop breeding Buckeyes and replace them with Delawares.

A couple times, I have emailed Glenn to ask breeding questions. He emails me back the same day. He's a very nice guy.

So, that's my experience with Sand Hill. Kind of mixed between good & bad. I think quality depends on what you order.

Ok, so I looked around and found some like $500. Then I went to Brinsea.com and found the advance EX on sale for $459. Then I googled "Coupon Code Brinsea.com" and found one : ADozenGirlz , for 10% off through November. So that brought it to $413.99. +$38 shipping Is that a screaming deal?? Or is that the norm? I liked the $200-$300 price range, but this one sounds so good. Thank you chickee for the review

Just a thought if any of you are looking for a new incubator, here's what I've found. This current sale is going on through the end of november at brinsea.com . BUT I found LAST year on Black Friday they had 20% off incubators (many of them anyways) ! So I called to see if they knew what the Black Friday specials were going to be this year. The woman stated she didn't know, BUT there is a new sale coming out the 27th, she just doesn't' know what it is. Or can't tell me yet. So I'm going to see what that one is before I decide which way to go.

There are now fifteen cockerels and only nine pullets at Thistle Dew Ranch. Last night I took six cockerels - housed with HHandbasket's flock for the past three or four months - and two pullets from the Homestead to tuck into the coop in the dead of night. There are four more definite pullet candidates but they roost in the rafters or the apple tree. Another would have been Hooligal, one of Punkin's house-hatched & raised brood, however, she went broody literally on the eve of transport, after laying for less than two weeks. I guess she decided she wanted to be a teen-aged mother. Even though I had been removing eggs from underneath her, daily, she stayed clamped down over nothing! So, I relented and gave her three flock eggs. She achieved her goal 3 days ago, hatching two chicks, so she won't have to move to the Ranch until her babies are raised. Sneaky girl. There are two of the Easter Hatch pullets I just like seeing around the house here, so I am not gonna move them. Maybe. I dunno. It's certainly not fair to move any of the Grand Dame hens merely to even out the rooster/hen ratio at the Ranch.

Thanks for the referral. I really appreciate it. I am going to hold off for now on any SH ordering but it does seem like if you order a breed that is generally more available you will have more luck than you will have with breeds that are more rare.

[CONTENTEMBED=/t/25/california-northern/33800_50#post_12329838 layout=inline]Linda - that is a lot of roosters! Are you planning on keeping all of them or are they living life until they join the freezer club?[/CONTENTEMBED]
I only make Freezer Camp appointments for MEAN roosters. When one of my GrandChicks goes bad - and I mean MEAN nasty, not just the youthful and obnoxious exuberance of testosterone "poisoning" - then I will get rid of it. I have only done that a couple of times. Now, there have been some packing peanut cockerels I have been able to cull; they weren't hatched here, so it was easier to make that decision. Kinda wish I wasn't a Crazy Chicken Lady, but I am. :idunno
