Ron and Kim took your advice. Joan Baez and Jamie Lee Curtis are locked up in the coop. Tossed some pine needles a bit of scratch and some partially shelled walnuts in there too so they will have something to do. Gonna get them a cabbage or some Brussels sprouts and fill the treat ball when I get home.

I created a nesting box out of a plastic tote and when I left this morning It was being investigated by Vivian and Boom Boom both of whom are almost always responsible for the first eggs of of the day. The stinking Jays will be able to get at it too but Tom is home all day and will be keeping an eye out. I am discarding these eggs anyway but I don't want any raw egg snacks left in the temp nest box for the girls.

I hope that this will help them climb their way of the social ladder in the flock too. If they know this is their house than they should feel more comfortable hanging in it with the others. Ozzie doesn't help matters because he chases the two of them like a Sr boy chases the freshman girls.

So what do you guys do for naked wing bows on the favorite hen?

Most use saddles for over mated hens. I do not know if they cover the part that is bare on your girl though.

I've sprayed my coop with a dilution of Permethrin 13.3%. The last time we did a major coop clean out, DH and Monet painted the whole inside with a hydrated lime white wash. The inside was already painted so after a good scrubbing, the white wash was painted over everything and allowed to dry before letting the chickens back in. It may be my imagination, but I haven't had any problems with mites since doing that. I plan on white washing twice a year.

Instructions for Chipotle at the bottom

Have fun!
Thanks! I am going to try that Mayo one...... although I have two full jars of store bought in my pantry.....

Anyway, what do you do with Lemon Curd? I have never really heard of it.

Yes.

Here is mine:
I love those things! But I have limited counter space now and it doesn't seem like a good use of space for me. However, I have the eggs all over my counter anyway until I get them in a carton and into the fridge. Do you think they would fit Large fowl medium size eggs?

I have had fumble fingers for the last week or so and have dropped about 5 eggs! I have more than I need, but it still irritates me when I do that.

Its not a bad idea to spray the coop ( or at least the roosts and wood parts) every month That way you can jsut use a spray bottle and do it fast, rather then scrub and have to get in every cranny and take hours. Be careful of it around cats, and if you raise bugs.
This is going to sound retarded I am sure, but what parts of the coop aren't wood? My entire coop is wood? Also I am assuming you have to remove all the bedding and spray, right?

Does anyone ever spray the roost just as a precaution? Does it do any good to do that?

Just checking for opinions here because just reading some of these posts and looking at the pictures make me itch. I try to be proactive and not reactive......

Thanks she has a saddle that she has been wearing for a couple of months but her wing bows are not covered and are still bare. I am thinking of isolating her in the tractor during the day and removing the saddle but was wondering what to do about her bald patches. Is there a medication...I saw something somewhere about honey??? that will help her to heal?

Also if I do isolate her should I give her a buddy? The tractor is about 3x7 and only about 2.5 feet tall

Lemon Curd is great on toast. It can be used to put between layers of Sponge Cake too!

Curds are old fashioned fresh Jelly. Try making it.

My Middle Daughter that does not like mayonnaise loved the Chipotle mayonnaise. She told me that I need to make more of it tonight when I get home.

I would use Vetricyn gel spray once or twice a day.

Yes, separate her or the rooster. Hopefully he will take an interest in other hens if separated.

Yep, I have one on my counter. It holds large fowl eggs well, but it would not work for bantam eggs.

For lice, flip them upside down and you will see them around their vent. For mites, you have to go out at night to see them. It's likely poultry lice, and they cannot live on you, they live on feathers and feed on feather dander - since you have no feathers, you're good. They can live in the bedding for a very long time.

It may just be easiest to worm the whole flock and treat for lice/mites at the same time. I've used Ivomec topical wormer. It kills all the creepy crawlies and worms them. It's a topical, so you apply it to their skin between their wings. (not the feathers, but you have to get it on their skin)
Thank you - Sigh. I guess now I know all newbies have to be treated regardless... Are the eggs edible during treatment? And should I treat the broody house too?

For Permethrin in the coop, yes you can eat the eggs.

It is a bit more complicated for Ivomec. It is off label for chickens which makes in not legal to sell the eggs during the withdrawl period--two weeks after the second treatment. It is safe to eat them unless you have an allergy to Ivomec. The allergy is very rare and not much Ivomec gets into the eggs.

I eat them when treating with Ivomec.

YOu want one with wings ( a hen saddle) they do make them, but I have nto seen one advertised in a while, I need to get them for the breese, they are looking a bit bare.

wow, thats a great idea! I might do that to all my cubbords I use as a-coop-trimonts, nesting boxes roosts, etc ( its what we did with the old kitchen cabinets)

Lemon curd is great! It can be any flavor, berry, lime, whatever. It is very sweet, like a frosting sort of. I make that on occasion. I lived in Australia and they had home made mayo, I hated it! its only best foods for me, none of this real crap. i might try to chipolte that, however.

Some have metal roofs or plastic coops. Mine is under the house so its concrete with extra wood. I change the bedding if there are visible bugs, otherwise I deep litter and hope for the best. You could spray the bedding under your roost, that would help if just being proactive.

The handyman is here taking my kitchen apart! He keeps pulling out all this copper piping and muttering. IM not sure if that is good, Im guessing that stuff is not going back in....
