Awwwww........ man!!!!! That sucks! I remember playing foursquare. One of my favorite games at school. Aside from an occasional ball to the face I never got hurt doing that though. I do remember running to get on the bars that you swing hand-over-hand on and slipping on the step. Went straight down on my belly and knocked the wind out of myself. Seemed like it took me 1/2 hour to get it back. As you can see, I was very traumatized by it, considering I still remember it aft about 48 years.

Oh yes, the monkey bars!

That is how I broke my arm...Weirdly and oddly, I fell out of a pickup on I-5 and came away with only a mile concussion and bruises. My brother had to spend the night in the hospital. Funny how we can get hurt more doing mundane things....

Darn frozen pipes. No water really could use a shower about now. I hope nothing burst though it doesn't look like it.

Fortunately we have not had any of the house pipes burst....just a PVC on that goes out to a hose bib in the front yard and a 3-way splitter popped of at the hose connection. I just had to turn the spigot off at the splitter and my Hubby capped off the line going to the hose bib. He bought metal pipes about 8 years ago and always intended to replace the PVC there anyway. Guess he will finally be doing that this spring whether he wants to or not......

Quote: They should be fine. Our temps are going to be getting above freezing at night, so only a couple more nights of it. It's supposed to be warmer today, so they will come out for a drink. I caught some of mine eating snow yesterday.

Hey guys! We got around 6" of snow in Grass Valley and about 4" where we are. The chickens were so funny! They hopped and flew over the melting bits of snow so they wouldn't have to get their chicken feet cold.

I put Bag Balm on the roos combs and wattles (especially the Orp) and on the girls' that have single combs. Everyone seems fine.

Question time:

We got home and the person that had wanted us to put a heat lamp (we didn't) in the coop had put an electric garage light (the plain bulb type that hangs from a hook and cage) in the coop.
Wasn't very happy with their decision because of the 24 hour light exposure they received and because I'm worried about dependency upon the supplemental heat, even if it's just a bulb.

The question is, will they just bounce back if I remove the light?
I'd remove it now if you don't want it. The longer they have it, the more used to it they will get.

today my water froze but slightly they could peck through that. the main issue is no one left the coop.
Yep. Most of mine hid in the coop all day. I did have some come out for a quick drink then back inside they went!

Any suggestions on keeping the red bowl type Auto-waterers thawed out? Mine have a 5 gallon bucket mounted outside the pen with PVC running at a slope to the waterer. It had iced over for 2-3 days, but this morning it was a solid block of ice. I had to take them out a container of warm water. Tried to thaw the auto waterer with the warm water too, but didn't want to have it crack on me so I didn't make the water very warm. I suspect it's frozen all the way to the bucket. I don't want to spend a bunch of money for a problem that will likely only last a few more days. The run is covered so there was no snow in there and the coop is small enough that the chickens stay pretty warm at night. They wanted no part of the snow when I tried to let them out yesterday. It was pretty funny to watch. Usually they come flying (literally) out when I open the door, but only my blue hen (in my Avatar) came out at all. She took about 5 steps out, said to herself, "Cr*p..... that's cold!" then went right back in. They have not made any attempt to leave the run since then.
I shut down my auto waterer and am using the 3 and 5 gallon waterers right now.

Oh! I forgot I have the 1 gallon one I use when I have chicks. I will have to dig that one out. I used one of my Pampered Chef big Mix and Measure cups and forgot to bring it in at dusk. I hope it didn't freeze and break overnight. It was actually 32 degrees this morning instead of 26 like it was yesterday morning so at least the temps are headed the right direction. It's also pretty breezy which might account for the warmer temperatures.

We were at 25 this morning coldest so far.

It's not yet getting warmer out there.

thankfully an atmospheric inversion seems to have set up here, as its 20° down in the valley, but only 32° up here on Sonoma Mountain -- after getting as low as 24° yesterday & the day before. i'm sure the chickens are pleased with the change!

Any geeks out there? I thought I'd go for a trip in the T.A.R.D.I.S. tonight to get my mind off of the cold I have. Ignore my pasty sick-face.

We had a surprise ( it turned out ok) this morning.
Mario went out to find only 4 ducks in the duck coop! He didn't know quite what had happened until he turned around to see he had left the back door ( 1/2 the coops opens for easy egg acess) WIDE open.

My newly laying french muscovy pullet was missing! She has been going to bed at odd times and we were afraid she had been taken in the night by the bobcat ( who is due to go towards her den usual right around xmas/ new year week ).

Turns out she left early to lay in a super secret hidden nest. She showed up about 9 AM to take a nice warm bath in the heated duck pool ( ok I just put hot water in it, its not heated) BAD #3! BAD! She is unrepentant and hissed at me to not steal her eggs anymore. I think she will start sitting when we go away for New years and she has a pile of eggs . Clearly we have broody soil around her that infects everyone.

After being sure we had lost our prime mother duck, I don't think MArio will be leaving the door open again....

Sooooo, lucky! Glad it turned out well.

I have a couple of hens that are suspiciously plucking their belllies.
