So sorry about the little one

I hate losing them when they are so little an innocent. But I love looking at all your chicken pictures! You have quite a variety!

thanks, it was a sweet little chick, but was barely keeping its eyes open yesterday -- i could tell it wasn't long for this world.

and re: variety, i keep telling myself I'm going to narrow down to only three breeds -- but ended up with some spare marans, and can't resist the blue eggs of CLs... at least they all fit in the pens (for now)!

I told myself I had just the right amount last fall, too. But now I have12 BC Marans, 6 OE and 10+ mottled Ameraucana eggs on the way....

Liz,
I got my Hovabator 1588? with fan at Nasco in Modesto. The egg turner didn't come with it but Tractor Supply had a decent deal on them so all together it wasn't too bad & I love it. I did so much better with it than the Little Giant. I loaned my Brinsea Ova 90 out so I am going back to the Hovabator & a small King Suro 20 I bought used. I did buy a hygrometer on Ebay from incubator warehouse to monitor the humidity & drilled small whole in the side below the turn & put tiny drip irrigation hose thru it with elbows to feed all the water channels. That way I used a big syringe without a needle to fill the trays with water when needed. I thought the frequent opening of the incubator messed with the humidity too much so this way I don't have to open it til hatch day. The hygrometer has a internal monitor that I just set on top of the eggs & the readout is outside. I guess I will have to get everything set up. I am already collecting hatching eggs from all the breeding pens Aaron & set up some weeks back. Good luck.......it is such fun........I have fond memories of my first crazy hatching seasons.

I will be hatching Delawares and SG Dorkings soon. @capayvalleychick is collecting eggs. I am very excited because this year I get to hatch some of the Delawares from @kathyinmo ....

One of my nicer Dork pullets has a serious injury on her foot. It looks like she caught her center toe on something and almost ripped it off. The laceration goes 2/3 of the way around the toe.
I didn't see it right away. She's out on pasture (which is dirt, due to the drought) and there was all kinds of yuck in the wound. Infection has set in and the foot is swollen.
I noticed her limping and brought her in the house for treatment. My husband tried to scrub all the gunk out of the wound, which made it start bleeding. Bandaging a 5 toed fowl is a challenge.
Her behavior is normal. She watched him cleaning out the gunk with curiosity, I could barely watch. She seems perfectly healthy, other than the foot. She's not eating her chicken feed but scarfed down the cat kibble he gave her.
She is one of my first Dorking pullets to reach Standard weight, so I want to try to heal her foot and use her for breeding. I don't usually medicate chickens, but I want to give her an antibiotic to help the wound heal. My vet doesn't deal with chickens and would just tell me to cull her. I can't afford UCD vets.
What should I use and where can I get some penicillin or appropriate antibiotic for poultry?

yes, they lay beautifully pearly-looking white eggs -- their only downside is that they LOVE to roam around, and i can't let them free-range all the time, due to too many predators around -- so they complain. but they're wonderfully beautiful -- and i like the idea of helping to keep an old heritage breed going!
Hi Lawatt,
What camera and lens do you use? Love all of your pics. Hope you don't mind me asking

So sorry that your girl is injured. I don't have any advice for antibiotics but I do recommend using Vetericyn on the wound. I had a hen with a terrible abscess and the Vetericyn HydroGel Spray helped it heal quickly.

Look up the dosage, but Penicillin is for wounds. I think it is 2ccs injected into the breast. You would only need to do this for a couple of days.

Anti biotic ointment without pain killer for a couple of days and then switch to Vetricyn Gel until the wound heals. Chickens have all healed up nicely for me so far.

. Isn't that the way it goes?? I was content, but have a few different breeds I'm planning on.
Then @chiqita 's voice keeps going off in my head every time I start baking a cake. When I told her I bake and decorate she said "And you don't have ducks?" I'm doing a boat cake now, and I can't believe I don't have duck eggs for it! Last weeks Little Mermaid cake was the same situation. So I've been looking up layer ducks. I've read they're messy, but I'm still thinking I need some

I love the Delawares & always told myself if I could have only one chicken breed it would be them. I lost my rooster after selling off all my extras that free ranged so now am begging a new one of off Lotsapaints in Paso Robles. I have 3 pullets & a hen waiting for their mate.....LOL
