So your saying not to use the Dienomite strips because they are not safe? I have had them on my list of things to get. So you wait 8 days after spraying your birds with Pyrethrin to collect eggs?

I am not saying you should get them or not since it will come down to a personal decision. There is conflicting information out there about the withdrawal period. I think labels are not always the most reliable source since most products are not tested on laying hens.

I prefer looking for scientific studies when it comes to food safety.

Ok so it's a bit off topic but how does one go about getting the "Golden Feathers" or "Platinum Poultry" chingas next to your name?

Robert...if you go to the BYC Store and look up "membership" there are 2 options. The Golden Feather is $20/year and the Platinum Si more like $60/year. I just got my Golden a feather a few days ago, but for some reason I can't see the Platinum anymore when I look. You have to have certain number of posts, etc before you can get certain levels. You also get more privileges

No snow! Dumping rain causing the few inches of ice in the chicken yard to become a dam, welling 4-6 inched of water in the runs and yard. We put old plastic totes in the run so if they go out they are not freezing their legs. It's going to be a nightmare when this water freezes! I left them in the coop yesterday but did not want to do it two days in a row!

We have had rain since Thursday here. Since Friday it has been ABSOLUTELY POURING non stop.
We have had close to 7" in 24 HOURS they say
It can stop now we have made enough up for this weekend thank you. I am not sure how much we have gotten since this started here but its all flowing down to Folsom Lake at this point I can tell you lol as nothing else can absorb into the soil and this has been the case since Friday
There is no way I can clean my coops today unless this stops and it looks like we will be having rain still all day or at least a lot of it

I hear ya! We have had solid rain since Wednesday, but not as much as you. And we are supposed get more tomorrow....a break on Tuesday then pretty much more rain all week. I keep hearing these weather people say, "but it isn't helping with the drought" How dumb is THAT??? Of course it's "helping". It may not have ended it, but it is certainly helping!

The study was from putting permethrin on the chickens. It was barely found in the eggs.

If you spray the chickens with it(I would not) do not eat the meat for 7 days. You would also need to not let them breath it and you need to be careful of using it if bees are around.

Oddly permethrin comes from marigolds and for years was touted as a very safe and effective bug poison. It was sold by all of the organic and Health conscious places. As with anything you have to be careful but it is something to see a champion of the non chemical folks being considered bad now.

The reason there are conflicting withdrawal periods is because off label(not tested) products have an automatic 14 day period for not selling eggs or meat. That does not mean that they are not safe to eat.

Getting back to the die mite strips, they do not put out enough to get into the chickens but if you do not want to use them and you have mite problems you can use frontline and spray the coops every two weeks to a month with permethrin. Do not eat the eggs for a day or two if you are worried.

Another alternative is to use food grade DE in the coop. It will slow down mites but not completely get rid of mites so you would still need to treat them if Mites are a problem at your place. Of course DE has problems. It can hurt lungs and cause skin irritation. You and the chickens should not breath it and it will kill bees too.

Everything has it's pluses and minuses. You have to use even natural things correctly.

Today we found my daughters Bantam Leghorn cock dead. Last night, he looked like the picture above and we moved him inside. We believe it was from red mites. He has always been sensitive to mites, if that's possible. He would get them even when yhe others didn't and they were very hard to erradicate on him. We treated him for mites 6 days ago: dusted him with Sevin, treated with Revolution, changed his bedding and sprayed his coup with Sevin. He was holding his own this week and was eating and drinking. We were giving him Nutradrench. Yesterday, I retreated him as the second round for newly hatched mites. His poop was normal, but yesterday I purchased Ivermectin to give him as a last ditch effort.

Today, even though none of my other birds have mites, I will dust them all again.

We are pretty sad about the whole thing and all the effort we put out to save Hercules. If anyone has any words of wisdom, we would love to hear them. Could we have done a better job? Are some chickens more susceptible?

I'm so sorry. I don't think he would have passed from mites. I'm glad to hear you are sending him off for necropsy, it will hopefully give you some peace that there was nothing you could do. How old was he?

What do your guy's chickens do when it rains?

They usually hide under the coops, but this morning they don't even want to come out.

Yeah, see, that's what mine used to do. At the old house.

But we just moved and today I gave them the option of free ranging at the new place. I guess the excitement of being let out for only the 3rd time at the new house was much more rewarding than staying dry, because I currently have a flock of chickens that are all soaked to the bone...I'll have to share the pictures I took, it's pretty funny.

They look pathetic, like wet cats.

I just like to offer a word of care. Byc has some "cautions" ( I can't locate them right now!" About minors. Parental contact and supervision would protect everyone;-) does anyone know where the info on this is?

I didn't realize call ducks were so tiny and adorable! Must not get, must not get, must not get... Even if they're the perfect size for our tiny fish pond. We're in a neighborhood, not out in the country, and call ducks are loud, right? Since that's the whole reason for their existence?

That usually means it is falling in the wrong places where it is not going to get stored in snow or get into the water table or reservoirs.

Sometimes they just mean its not enough to end it (duh!!!)
