California - Northern

Mine have a covered run, but the entrance (of course) is pretty muddy. The rain seems to be blowing in. I had to move some stepping stones in to be able to get in far enough to collect eggs. I usually let them out every day but haven't much since the rain started. I finally caved and let them out today. They seem to be enjoying looking for worms and bugs when the rain is light but they sure run for the coop when it gets a little heavier.......they are pretty funny to watch!

my runs are completely covered also, but Sonoma Mtn (i live near the top) is an ancient volcano, and so has quirky geology. there's a fair amount of clay in the soil, so water, once it starts seeping in, can get backed up & have nowhere to go. so the rain isn't blowing in much, but the water is coming up in the coops in odd places (like, in my main coop, the higher elevation end of the coop is inundated, but the lower end is still dry), which i think has to do with the water table rising and patterns in the underlying clay -- so it's going to be an interesting puzzle to figure out how to build in some drainage for the future.

I haven't let mine out during this storm, the rain has been pretty hard most of the time, and i keep hearing hawks in the trees -- so, the chicklets been sticking to the drier sides of the runs. the week-old chicks are lucky to still be living in their brooder in the guest bathroom indoors, warm and dry with an Ecoglow to nestle under!

Mud!!! Yech :(
It's been dry so long I forgot where I stashed my wet weather gear.
Chooks are happy tho. I'm making soup and they're getting all the trimmings.

Muffins sound really good right now. I might have to go see if I have the fixin's for some...
I'll be making Meyer lemon scones tomorrow, thanks to Mary.

My coops are fine, but 2 of them will need a good cleaning once the storm passes. I added shavings to the cull pen (all cockerels except 1 pullet with a leg injury) before the storm. They will need to be processed before my meaties arrive at the end of the month. I can go a long time in the summer without the coop getting smelly, but in wet weather, it just doesn't dry out. More birds inside as well, so that doesn't help.

I just started eggs a couple of days ago with some under the broody and some in the bator so no babies to worry about yet.. I found one egg in the run part of the broody coop and it was cold. I put it back under her but won't hold out hope it will hatch. I have to pick the hen up and put her in the run to make her eat and drink when she goes broody and I think this one might still have been stuck in her feathers when I did that this morning. I will have to be much more careful from now on!

Ok...I'm getting a pretty good tax refund so I thought I would treat myself to a better incubator. (I'm using the Farm Innovator). I'm looking at the Brinsea Octagon 20 advanced. It is on Amazon for $349 with free shipping. What do you all think of that one ans is that a good price? I am also a little confused by these 2 listings. This first one haw a much simpler listing and is model number B00A2XSLDI. It is the one that has free shipping:

This one looks like the same exact one, sold by the same company, but has a $29 shipping fee. It does not give a model number and has very little in the description:

Are they the same incubator?

Are they the same incubator?

They are the same thing. The EX adds a humidity pump.

They are very good incubators. The humidity pump adds to the cost. It is usually about 90 more to get the ex. The humidity pump adds 126 if purchased seperately.

The Humidity pump sits outside the incubator and uses tubing to add water to a pad. The control unit turns on the pump.
