Candelaria, I'm so sorry to her that you are in labor all ready. I have some experience with that as well. My daughters were 24 weeks and 29 weeks at birth. How many weeks are you? You said you had a June due date?

Oh no! Not "in labor" thank The Lord! Just signs of preterm labor... 5 min Braxton contractions. Thinning and slight dilation. The thing is that the sudden elevation change of thousands of feet causes increased pressure- causing increased contractions. So smart to stay put like the hubby wants. It's along the same lines I think causes chicken eggs to have bad air cells when shipped to drastic elevation changes. Just a theory? Anyhow, I'm about 24 weeks - would like to make it to 36 weeks;-) thanks for the concern!

There is a woman in Napa who states on her website that she sexes with 90% accuracy. Not sure if she would be willing to teach others but it might be worth asking.

It looks like she is no longer selling chickens, but her site is still up.

Here is a link to her website:

Hmm… would LOVE if she taught! I may shoot an email.

On another note… Does anyone know of easy directions for Mareks vaccine for baby chicks? Never done chicks before and was going to sell these. My feed store says they carry it for about $11.00 . not sure if that comes with the needles or not. Is there a certain size needle I need?

Chicks should hatch, I'm thinking monday. But when my broody hatched out, one was 2 days early. So I'm prepared

Really appreciate all the help on this thread. Learned years worth of info just being on here. Everyone is so helpful. Love this thread

I'm at about 90% with the BLRW's feather sexing at day 1 or 2, the bantam mixes I was 50/50. With the basques all bets were off.

Ok I have a question!
1. Is the blrw bred to to be feather sexed? I know some breeds are im not sure what ones are.
2. Did you keep the chicks long enough to know or are people telling you if they have boys? I know you do a lot of 4hers so you would hear back.

I find this stuff facinating.

Take it easy!! I had the opposite problem, all my babies were way late. Hopefully you little one will stay in there until it's time.

So- an Update of my chicken code violation:

I went to the Citrus Heights City Council meeting last night. I was able to to stand up and give my little chicken presentation to the City Council. I made copies of my letter with my picture, and they were handed out to the council members, and put in the record. They told me that this was an issue that has come up before, and they weren't opposed to looking at changing the code. The put it on their calendar of items. After it was over the Head of code enforcement (who happened to be at the meeting) introduced himself, and we were able to have quite a long conversation about it. He received my email, and told me that technically at this point, (from his perspective) he has to follow the code until the city council tells him otherwise. He said he understands my position, and suggested that I find a temporary place for them until the re-inspection (that they are required to do) is done, and this kind of blows over. I told him that I would really like to avoid even temporarily re-homing them, and he said (kind of cryptically) to talk to Officer Leah Buck (the officer who originally wrote the violation), and see what we can work out. I really hope the City Council makes it a priority.

On a happier note,
I got my eggs from Papa Brooder this morning, and they are in the 'bator. So I have 6 (of my own eggs), on day 12, and 4 Lavender Orp, 4 Lemon Cuckoo Orp, and 28 Silkie/Sizzle/Frizzle eggs that just went it.

YES. That's similar to my experience here in Tahoe. In speaking to my friend here in animal control- he doesn't want to interfere as long as we're clean and quiet Nd none of the NEIGHBORS are complaining. We are unincorporated but have the whole "Tahoe basin" code restrictions looming over us. So far so good.

My boy was very slow feathering while the ladies were normal feathering. I give more credit to feathering than breed on the wing sexing.

I have had feed back from the ladies that bought chicks last year, they were 8 weeks old when I sold them. I didn't have much interaction with them since I knew they wouldn't be staying but DH is fond of their temperament while they are in the laundry room brooder.

The kids really go for the bantams. They usually have mixed layer flocks of hatchery birds and the size of the BLRW's intimidates them. Dude is not mean-just closer to size SOP calls for, the hens are larger than the roosters they have at home.

Is anyone an expert on codes? I'm in sac. I have chickens on 4 acres. There's no way my neighbors could complain. Since I have this land, can I legally have chickens????

Well I'm due June 3rd:-0 that's a long hold. You can sell them to someone more time efficient ... I still will compensate you for wasting your time this far. P.me your paypal addy maybe?
I'll just list them for sale. I'll have more to sell you later as I hatch this year. No need to compensate me, we'll work something out later in the summer if you still want them.

Quote: Agree.

this was the EE egg and u can just barely see the embryo
this would be the other egg it formed more but still died. what went wrong? (Incase u were following ronott1 and my convo the first pic is EE and was set 1/25 the other was set on 1/22)
They were in the middle somewhere when they quit. They did not make it to day 18. Look at reasons for stopping at day 12 is. There may have been a temperature spike or temperatures may have been too high or too low.

My guess is too low. What is your incubator? Do you have a Brinsea spot check to check temps?
Agree, mid term quitters.
