Do any of you raise turkeys for meat birds? If you do, what breeds? Do you know of anyone who sells them locally? ( I am just East of Sacramento) I have been doing some research and I may give it a try..

Hi everybody!

It's been a long time since I posted anything - hope everybody's doing well.
Things have been a bit rocky here, but DH is finally done with chemo and doing well, so maybe things can get back to normal-ish.

And I'm looking for some white call ducklings - do you guys know of anyone nearby who has some for sale?
Welcome back I have often thought of you esp when I drive over 175. Like everyone else I hope that your husband is doong wonderfully now. Do you have BBS? I don't have ducks. Good Luck I hope you find some.

I raised a couple of Naragansets and a couple of Burbon Reds...they were delicious. My feed stored ordered them for me I got them SR this was before I knew about breeder stock and the reason to go for that instead. Welcome and good luck finding turkeys.

Wb also!
I have french muscovies that are the exact opposite of calls in every way except they also are white and poop a lot! Walt however is one of the best breeders in the country so he is a safe bet!

Glad to have you back on again! Hope the chemo has kicked the cancers butt big time! My mom's recovery was pretty darn quick hope his is as good or better.

Aww - thanks guys! I had almost forgotten how awesome you all are.
We went to the Humboldt county poultry show in Ferndale and DH just fell in love with the call ducks. I thought they would make a great birthday / "yay-no-more-chemo" gift.
Oh - and of course I need some ducks because..um.. just because.

Good thoughts your way. Glad your husband is doing well.
My local 4H office is always one of my first call when I am on a quest for something local.

I have white Call ducks, but none for sale at the moment. I don't think you will find Call duck ducklings from anyone that is a real breeder of them......they are just to fragile the first week or so and they also can potentially be worth a lot of money when mature. Two good reasons not to sell babies. I don't know where you would find any at this time of year. They are very cool ducks and I highly recommend them to anyone that would interact with them at all. Here is one of my males.

Big day for us here at the farm!

Aside from normal 4 kids chaos, we tried cleaning out the play house aka broody house. It's mostly done.

Started the wheat grass.
Started the BOSS to soaking.

Met Karen @sewandgrow when she brought over a brand new incubator to try! WOW! Thank you so much - we shall have fun with this

Not sure if I trust the new parts yet for the kaput incubator. Will probably run it for a day. Unplug it, run it again and do that for a few days to make sure it stays stable.

Had a young family come buy 8 chicks. It's always so fun to have families over - the littles love the chicks!

Went to candle the eggs from the kaput incubator. When I found the bator it had spiked to 104.5. Unplugged it to cool off and plugged it back in, only to have it spike to 108

Of course it was very full of eggs. A friend said that he had room in his bator so I took them over. During candling I discovered that one of my EE's is avoiding the roosters or is infertile (is that possible?) as the same colored blue eggs were all blanks. Anyone want to guess how many of the eggs died? Well, included the 4 bulbs, I removed a total of 10 eggs from 50.

Super happy and thankful that my friend let me put the eggs in his bator. So many chicks saved!

Just to see if the heater would turn off, I plugged in the bator and it got to 114 before I unplugged it.

BIG EVENT. My son fell in love. He's 14 so this is funny.

He saw MF D'uccles for the first time. He's cracking me up. He totally wants them! I've always liked LF and dual purpose birds so the concept of bantams escapes me. But I want him involved so it looks like we'll be learning about useless (now don't get all wound up!) ornamental chickens.

Came home and enjoyed the incredible sunset. Fed the children. Doing chicken chores discovered the MFL cockerel had eloped with one of the pullets.

Did I mention USELESS chickens?

Either that or we had a theft. No sign of predators. My son is pretty sure a human was responsible for tearing back all the bird netting but I don't know. Hopefully tomorrow they come back. We went with flashlights and hunted but this is a big area with lots of trees.

For some reason Google chrome isn't working and I can't access my emails. The internet is having severe difficulties and I can't access FB (kind of important as I have customers!) and BYC will barely load. We are talking a minute to go from one page to the next.

Thank goodness my husband is coming home tomorrow!

Like I said. A big day, we shall see what tomorrow brings :)

Rebecca so nice meeting you & your children. Lovely children by the way & you are all so polite which is such a nice treat now a days.
Glad your husband is coming home. I can imagine what a comfort that is to you.
Nice meeting your Golden Laced Wyandotte rooster too.
Look forward to having you & your family to the party.

Traditional meat turkeys cant breed naturally and you will have to get them from a feed store.
I have royal palms but they are the second smallest turkey. If you want heritage go for something else.

I cooked a Dexter Pot roast on Sunday--It was very tasty!

My Family was amazed that Grass Fed Beef was so nice and tender.
We bought a grass fed cow this year. The meat has so much more flavor! Some cuts need to be cooked differently though.

Whoo....hoo............. I just realized I do no how to insert picture...I swear I stumbled a crossed it purely accidently. Now if I could just remember who it was that I was going to show my peach bin grow out pens to...............

So cool!

Very handsome boy! The feedstore I go to recently purchased a bunch of Call ducks and is now breeding them... definetly *not* a real breeder, lol, but they try.

My friend's farm in Brentwood is 10 acres.  I would take 10 acres of farm with a surrounding buffer zone of 30 acres!  :)

I agree with you! My late hubby and I looked at 100 acres once! He looked at me and said what do we do with it? I said live, plant, and graze in 10 and let the rest of it allow us to have some peace and quiet! Oh and a dirt track way over there for you! Someone else bought it, but it is fun to think about....now 10 acres with a 30 acre buffer would be great! :love
