You must be busy Debi. I missed your posts
A small hawk got one of Aaron's new quail right through the cage. He couldn't pull it out but he killed it. That was right in his backyard in town in Modesto. They have dogs but it didn't deter the hawk.
Mondays are a blur for me. It is our homeschool co-op day and we leave the house at 10 and don't get back until around 5. I teach a middle school/high school physical science class as well as 2 different drama classes. Then we go to the farm to check on chickens after co-op since we are only 2 miles from the farm. I come home and sleep on the couch while The Voice is on!

That's sad that Aaron lost one of his new birds. Maybe he needs some crows at his house!

This seems to be a very common misconception. When I took my horned heifer to the Heirloom Expo, the most FAQ was regarding how a cow could have horns. I had to explain that so many times that I was wishing that I had written it on a sign above her stall!

That question is right up there with "Do you have to have a rooster, for hens to lay eggs?"

I don't want to give a biology, physiology, lesson every time asked, but do find it unbelievable that sooooo..... many people are clueless.

It just really hammers the point home how far our society has moved away from the family farm. Every child used to know that eggs came from chickens, milk from cows, bacon from pigs, etc. Now they'll just tell you it all comes from Wal-Mart.

growing up I loved grabbing the new horns on a little Heifer. It was so cute and play full!

There is someone selling Blue Mille Fleur D'uccle eggs on the The NEW Crazy 24hr AUCTION thread. There are probably some restrictions on who can bid so you may need your mom's help if you want them.

Thank you for the heads-up

Coopcommander is in school and has chores so may not see this to say thank you.

We are getting eggs from a lady that is local and hopefully some chicks from @fortyfivefarm ! It is quite exciting. He should have plenty to choose from for setting up his unrelated breeding stock.

Welll...I learned something new today. We have had hawks in the nieghbothood in past years but I have not seen any for the last few. I have, however, noticed an increase in the number of crows wround here I never made the connection between the two. The crows spend lots of time up high in the very tall pine trees squawking thier heads off. Sometimes they are so loud I hear them when I am indoors with the TV on. I always have to go outside and watch them for a bit. It is like they are having a very loud party up there. I will definitley have a new-found appreciation for them!

Now if I could just find some redeeming qualities in the Scrub Jays we also have in abundance!

My 12 yr old daughter wants Mille Fleur D-uccles, too. Maybe once your son has his breeding program up and running, we can get some eggs or chicks. I'm not going to say anything to Monet about it because it already is hard enough making her wait. We need to move some chickens out and make a place for them before we bring any bantams in. It is hard to say no when she sees them at the shows and gives me that look that says, Pleeeeease???

I was just thinking about that this morning! We have one resident Scrub Jay who looks so fat and healthy. I was scattering sprouted grain for my flock this morning and I saw him sitting on a lower branch in our small almond tree. I'm sure as soon as I turned my back, he was down on the ground scarfing up seeds! Not only do my birds look nice and healthy but so do the wild birds that frequent my yard! I don't mind if the scrub jay eats some of the seeds as long as he stays out of the coop and away from the eggs!

I remember her pleading for some little birds at last year's Stockton? show when we were looking at those gorgeous Langshans! They were the Porcelain D'uccles weren't they? She does pick pretty birds.

Isn't that the truth! We told him he had to figure out housing. Gave him some ideas and BAM! He's out running the planer, recruited a sister to run the sander, pilfering odd pieces of lumber and almost has a house. Well done coopcommander! In that respect it is easier to help him get started than my 12 yr old daughter. She would look at her dad and wait for him to make housing.
