I just got a request for chicks, but if I had a mama hen who could "nurse them".

I'm hoping they meant, as in take care of them and not actually nurse them. No mammary glands here kids.

I had someone order straight run 5 hens 2 roosters.... erm.. 10 people last week for FBCMs sexed. I have written INNN the ad THIS MEANS WE CAN NOT GIVE YOU ALL HENS AND DO NOT KNOW THE SEX OF THE CHICKS! I no longer bold it, because it did annoy some people.

Monterey divides the line between Northern California and Southern California because there is no Central California. It is really all about the water, Northern California provides primarily all the water to California and that is why there is only one that rules and that would be NorCAL. plus who would want to live in that place down south other than maybe San Diego.

So, I am having problems with my black Langshans hatching. We are feeding the parents King Freedom layer pellets. Right now, they are in a breeder pen that is 7 ft x 10 ft. I know that my friend tosses them some vegies which is good and some other things like bread which is not so good. I give them soaked grains when I am there once or twice a week. I am going to try supplementing their diet with something but I don't know what. It has to be something that is easy to give them either in their water or mixed with their food. What I do for my flock here in town won't work out there because it is more labor intensive and my friend's kids help with the chicken chores. Any suggestions???

Calf Manna, big old bird water stuff, vitamin b complex shots. But I can NOT find out how much on the b's. driving me batty. Anyone hear peter browns fertitlity lecture on the chicken whisperer? I missed it and now I cant find it.

I saw one of my showgirls lay her egg today! I moved them from the nest because i was collecting and thought they were trying to be broody. She was in lay. at first I FREAKED out because she looked prolapsed then I saw white. very interesting! I'm shocked how little bloom silkie eggs have. I picked up a new Marans egg last week and it stuck to my hand.

I need to list chicks on CL but I keep putting it off. DH doesn't mind if I hatch chicks as long as some are going out the door to new homes.

I was looking at Manna Pro Poultry conditioner. Anyone ever used it? Cheryl used to give her birds Dr. Cheeke's YQ+ from King Feed. I would like to listen to that lecture, too. Shang and his girls don't seem to have a problem with fertility but there is some kind of problem.

I am a murderer. I had 5 duck eggs that are hatching now. Last night I put them in the oven to keep warm so i could clean the bator since the chick had already hatched. While putting them back I listened to each one. all 5 were pecking and peeping. I was on the last 2 eggs to put away when one slipped and broke. I wrapped it in a wet paper towel.and put it back in. The Duckling was moving and talking. Would have hatched tonight or tomorrow as the others are piping now As I feared it died this morning.

They are not as sensitive to temperature when they are ready to hatch. Next time carefully put them into an egg carton while cleaning.

Well, I'm feeling pretty crappy. At lockdown 8 of the 9 d'Anver eggs were moving. When I went in to check on the chick that was bleeding I re-candled. No movement in any of them, 1 more phoenix has pipped and there is 1 partridge left. I didn't see anything moving in the other 2 phoenix eggs either. Looks like at best 4 of 30 hatching.

Awwww, I'm SO sorry!

You might want to carefully crack the top on one and see if the chick is alive and can't turn to hatch. Too high of humidity causes bloody navel and chicks that are too big to turn.

So frustrating...maybe they were just napping or resting?

When I asked, worried about it being a problem, I was told it just shows they are breeding. Maybe it's a testosterone indicator?????
