I'm absolutely in love with my new Cream Legbar chick. She's about 4 weeks old, and has already made a mess of her food in the brooder. She's digging out as much as she can with her beak. What a little turd! But she's so cute and sweet, I don't even care that she's making a mess. She already has a tiny little crest of feathers on her head. It's adorable. I think I'm going to call her Lady. And one of the two Blue Laced Red Wyandottes.
I feed the new chicks wet feed. They can't fling that around and waste it like the dry feed.

Nope, they're blue :) I don't want Splash or Black. I am set on having a BLUE Laced Red Wyandotte and I ordered 6 blue ones just to be sure that I do get a blue female. It's one of my dream birds and I won't settle for a splash or a black! :) They may be pretty but IMO Blue is the best!

Have any of you guys and gals entered the cute baby fowl contest?

Oh, how fun! I just entered.

This crazy roller-coaster of chickens is starting to get to me...

Feed store owner/friend gives me 18 mystery banty eggs to hatch: Yay
Both broody hens refused to be moved to "maternity wards": Boo
Fine - whatever hatches, hatches: Calm
2 days later, 11 eggs destroyed (stepped on? eaten? etc?) by the other hens: Boo
Fine - one silkie left with 7 eggs: Calm
Turken decides to be broody & takes over nest: Boo (for disturbing eggs 5 days before hatching) & Yay (she's an experienced mom)
Discovered yesterday morning that 1 egg hatched, 1 pipped, 1 peeping in egg: Yay
No movement in the other 4 eggs: Boo
Today, 4th egg pipped & 3 chicks doing great: Yay
Later today, found 4th chick hatched but dead (I think mom stepped on it): Boo

All-in-all, Broody Turken is pretty dang cute with 3 banty chicks - plus the eggs were free: Yay

for the yay's! Cute hen and chicks!

Oddly, I have read some literature about hens that have a missing or dead ovary that will do stuff like that. sometimes they even crow.
over the years I have had 4 hens of different breeds turn into what looks like a male with male sickle and saddle feathers. ..and a crow. Spurs on a normal laying hen is not unusual.
