How many nesting boxes should I have for a flock of 6 to 10 hens 2-4 breeds. Ill they should be laying hens only do not plan to raise chicks "yet". When I do will probably isolate the breeding hens.

Chicken hen.

What is an LDP, lol?

Too many ducks here to roundup and put in a pen, so no chance I can do that.

I have noticed that sometimes they don't start sitting for real for awhile, but have no idea why. How long has she been doing this?

-Kathy

3 days. She was doing it before but the turkey stole her eggs and there was kafuffle.

This is the supposed delivery at the feed store for today. Can anyone comment on these breeds. I may be raising some chicks out for relatives and the feed store doesn't have more delawares till mid may. Buff Orps seem to come every week.

Quote: Thanks... Some people in the peafowl forum have those to look over their flocks and have been really happy with them. No more animals for us, lol!

We ended up rehoming ours. First, we ruined her for her intended task. She was supposed to bond completely with the sheep, she wanted to live in the house with the people, the heck with those smelly sheep. They don't pass out pats and treats. Then she barked CONSTANTLY, so she had to sleep in the garage. Very common trait. It's fine if you live on a 1,000 acre sheep ranch, not so much if you have neighbors. Sleeping in the garage somewhat defeats the purpose of protecting the flock from predators

And she could not be contained by ANY fence. She would go over or under. Also a typical trait. They consider their territory to patrol to be bigger than our five acres (see the 1,000 acre comment). She always came home, but not very neighbor friendly, she didn't think they should own dogs so close to our sheep.

Lastly, when I moved in with my three dogs, that gave us SIX dogs!

2-3 should be good.

Ameraucana pullets will be Easter Eggers
Dark Red RIRs are hatchery RIRs

Both of them will lay a lot of eggs--best of the group probably.

Cochins go broody but I do not know if these will. They are not known as great egg layers.

Wyandottes are nice, middle of the road chickens.

In the next year or so you will want some from Breeders. It often goes that way with us.

X2, but my two hatchery blue Cochin pullets so far are good layers of a pretty golden brown egg. I bought them last year because I had a lone chick that needed friends. Now I am looking for homes for them. They are listed in the BYC Buy~Sell~Trade section.

So now the turkey is on them?

-Kathy

Baby turkey celery is on a seperate batch of duck eggs (that was nest 2) Nest one was stolen by mamma turkey pumpkins who then decided she didnt want it so the eggs were in the bator during the great heat spike of 2014 when I lost all eggs.

We have quite the egg rivalry here.
