California - Northern

Oh! The royal Phuphans:)

yes! I cant even find a google info on them, they seem very exotic!
I sold 4 bantam chicks and 4 sex link pullets today. I WILL NOT sell babies out from under their broody again. She seems mostly over it now but it isn't fair or nice or hen centered and I didn't plan or think things through. This whole chicken excursion is a learn as you go thing but I feel like this is a big black mark in my "good chicken mama" box. Gotta do my best to make up for it.

And in other events...we worked on and almost finished our little coop today. We moved it into the pen and as a result had to move the temp things that were in there. unearthed a nest of baby mice. I couldn't look but I can't lie, I called the flock in to have at it. We DO NOT need more mice and the birds need animal protein..right??
I always let her keep 1 or 2. then i sell when shes done. SHe does not notice LESS, just.. none, lol.

Thanks Ron! It says there's a chance of a storm all week, should they be spending their nights inside unless I can cover at least half of their pen? It's under a covered run, buy it's tall so the wind could blow rain in.

Like chiqita said, they will cry and huddle in the corner when the lights go out but they will be fine.

The important thing with chickens ls to be able to dry off and night. If they are dry and out of the wind mostly they will be fine in the rain this week.

It is much better than having them in the Bed room!

Agreed. It'll be nice to have only one brooder in my room instead of two! Though I will keep theirs in the garage for the upcoming rainy week in case the shower curtain I put over the pen isn't enough. We'll see. :)

What do you all wrap your birds in for the freezer?
I got a food saver for my Cornish X. I love it.

Got the go-ahead from the hubby so...I just ordered the Brinsea Eco 20 w/ turner!

Quote: I do have a Food Saver and was thinking of doing that. I kind of wanted to keep a couple whole as roasters, but wasn't sure it would fit. I've never sealed anything that big before.

I had to do custom bags for the roasters. At 8 1/2 weeks, they were too large for the Gallon bags. Some of them were a tight fit width wise. I had to get the tops of them in, and then shake them down into the bag.

I got a late start this morning, so I only got 4 done. It took 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. Since they are all 10 weeks old now, I knew they wouldn't fit whole into the bags, so I cut them in 1/2. Tomorrow, the remaining 7 are making their journey to Camp Kenmore.

(reads about all the incubator purchases and starts backing away slowly, hoping to avoid the hatching fever)

But congrats to those with new incubators!

It didn't work...did it??

Thanks! I did #2 today. Glad I didn't so it first. It was harder. Much more of the little fine hairs.

Storms in Redding? Really? Our KNVN news is saying hot and dry all week.

The forecast was right, poured from 8-10:30, wind played with canopies not weighted down. I did fine in the weather and sold all the eggs so I have room for this weeks.

I have some of the pretty wide rolls so I should be able to do that. . I have them in plain old bread-type bags resting in the fridge. I will vacuum seal them when they are ready to go to the freezer.

Question: is pranking people off of cl a thing? This guy has been screwing with times all day (with reasonable excuses) and calls right at dinner to say he is coming in 1/2 hr. Phone is set to not take messages just says ill say you called.

Im fairly sure ive been pranked. At least I had a waiting list...

Chicken people just don't show up or call back. Quail people are time consuming! !
