California - Northern

My oldest DD finally sent me pictures from a couple of hatches ago.

They are Blue Egg layers, OEs and a pair of Partridge penedesencas to the middle left. The light one with a slight eye liner is a boy and the brown one is a girl

I get to candle my eggs tomorrow night!! First time handling them all since setting. Two weeks until hatch.

I am SO excited. When I peeked in the TJ's eggs I saw several were developing.

So can you guys believe the size of that quail egg!!!! It's next to a olandsk dwarf, next to a New Hampshire red. Checked them for bleeding and everyone looks good .... I was already blown away at how they lay the size they do for how small they are and then this was found!

That came out of a Quail?!

It looks like a Bantam egg. It is a very nice egg. Almost makes me want quail.

(my youngest told be to get a pen together and hatch some quail.....)

These are from the one hen that eggs have not lightened during her laying cycle. I am hatching from her eggs, keeping some of the pullets as a base for my future flock.

You are funny!

The pictures are of the darkest eggs. The other 3 hens eggs started out nice and dark, but have lightened up considerably. They have been laying constantly since last September though. They are just starting to darken up again.
I know they'll lighten, but the ones from a fresh 'ink pot' are still fun.

My babies are growing soooo fast! I really hope they are all girls. I am assuming so until they show signs otherwise... anyone have any guesses so far? They are all chicks from feed stores, supposed to be pullets.

They have all been developing such personalities, they crack me up. They are also very hard to get good pictures of...

The lighter colored EE, 3 weeks old. Will she keep the yellow/gold feathers developing on her chest?

The darker EE, 3 weeks old. She is my most aloof chick so far, and she also likes to peck others' tail feathers. I've been discouraging it when I see it, and so far no wounds or anything.

The Australorp, 3 weeks old. She is the smallest of the crew, but she's very perky and follows the Sussex and Barred Rock around, doing whatever the bigger girls do.

The Speckled Sussex, 4 weeks old. She used to be more aloof but has come around. She's also surprisingly heavy for her size, although not too surprising because she seems to eat more often than everyone else. Except for maybe the Australorp, who follows her like a shadow.

Last but not least, the Barred Rock, 4 weeks old. She is the most social of everyone. As soon as I open the brooder, she is out and on my arm, hanging out and generally is very curious.

On a somewhat related note, I found an awesome chicken-related print by Ursula Vernon at the sci-fi convention I worked this past weekend! I just couldn't pass it up

ETA the artist's name. Must give credit where credit is due.
...I really shouldn't post late at night.

How very clever!  I didn't get close enough to realize these were old garage doors!  Wonderful!  Such a good idea - thank you for sharing that.  I didn't remember that at all - but then you have so much to see and I WAS trying to fend off my mothers case of chicken frenzy ;)

So easy to do at Deann's. She has a nice set up. :-)
