Hehe thanks, I love her. She's has her head in the brooder all day long. If I take a chick out, she licks it. The chicks scream when she does that, they don't understand that she thinks they're little puppies lol!! She does the same thing to kittens.

Genetics don't work that way.  Breeding two faults together will not balance, you'll just end up with chicks with both faults.  One parent should be correct.  Hang on, I'll go get my copy of the standard.

Breeding to a clean footed bird just gives you recessive nekkid legs that pop up when you have an otherwise fablous bird making you curse the name of whomever stuck that gene into you breeding stock. But bc is likely just hatching backyard egglayers ans zero erm... cares... will be given. They will just be happy to have blues!

Eeeek!!! Well good to know.....now. Lol!
Love my genetics peeps

At 5 and 6 weeks old, I think both the chicks and I are ready for them to go outside. Unfortunately, the coop still needs its doors, but I should have it done by this weekend!

Because they seemed to be suffering from cabin fever, I took the chickies outside on the lawn in a puppy pen for a little bit this past weekend. At first they were unsure, but quickly got over it and were picking grass, chasing each other around, and generally seemed to enjoy the space. I was happy just to observe. Who needs to do chores when you have happy chickens to watch??

I also introduced a nipple waterer (assembled from a tip on here) and the girls took to it right away. I think they like to play with it more than actually being thirsty though...

Yup, I'm solidly obsessed.

We all have that here!

53% at lockdown? What was incubation at? Curious what everyone uses
I sometimes hesitate to say what I do knowing it doesn't match what the "experts" & long timers recommend. I have learned through trial & error after trying to follow their directions to start with. For me in the Brinsea Ova 190 my best results were 53% throughout............. Start to finish turning every 45 minutes til lockdown. Humidity, of course, would climb on it's own while hatching was going on.

So after yesterday's terrible heat : 4 Marans hens laid really small eggs.
Like when a pullet has been layin for 3-4 weeks. Haven't weighed them.
Anyone heard of that before? Heard of them stopping laying.

I had a BW/AM lay a tiny egg too but it was an incredible color.

I tried the nipples 2 different ways in the brooders but you are so right they want to "play" with them.........what a mess....!!!!
